Which languages does my project require?

Posted 02 September 2013 - 07:44 AM

Hi everyone,

So, here's the thing.
I have a minor endavour on a smaller web project I wish to throw myself into.

I wish to make a website where people can log in and post classifieds of different types and catagories.

As I am fairly new to programming, but have some minor projects under my belt. However, I haven't undergone any larger web-projects yet, so this will be my first, and largest web project so far.

So basically, which languages will I need to master to create such a website?

Basics requirements, which the website will have to meet::
  • User function with login
  • Two different kinds of users (for instance: sellers and buyers)
  • Search function (so users can search through classifieds via different critia: such as price, location etc.)
  • Support the possibility of further development with new functions, add-ins, catagories, user functions etc. etc.

Which languages will I need to master? And what other setup do I need to have sorted out, to create such a website?

Thanks in advance ^^/>

HTML/CSS - Make the structure and style of the webpages
Possibly Javascript - add more dynamic functionality (may be the last thing on the list)
PHP (or some other server side language) - this will be the main one to learn. This will sit on the server and communicate with a database containing the classifieds and then return back the results to the client (also handle logging the users in etc).
MySQL - if you use a database (should do) you will need a way to query it.

That should do the trick. :)

Hi Ryano121,

That's what I thought, so that's good :-)
However, I believe there must be a lot of template-code out there, to cover those basic functions such as user-login etc., or am I wrong?

Not that I'm trying to cut any corners, but it would always be nice to have some reliable code to lean against, in case your own doesn't work fully?

that template code doesn’t help you if you don’t know what the code does. so for a PHP template you still need to know how to use it, which requires at least some PHP knowledge.

Either way you're going to need to know PHP and that's all that really matters at this point.

This probably gets decided on what you want to do this project for. Is this to learn or is it actually for a proper use somewhere. If it's the first then dive in and see where it takes you. If the latter then you probably want to spend more time reading up on security etc. Either way as I say you need to learn PHP. If you're going to do it you may as well get some good learning experience out of it.

We should mention that there are other server-side languages then PHP :), and databases other than MySQL. Java, Python, Ruby, ASP.NET (C#/VB.NET), etc.. MS SQL and, erm, others :dontgetit:

not to forget server-side Javascript (Node.js) and (the so-called) NoSQL databases.
