Building an email system in php

Posted 16 September 2013 - 05:40 AM

I want to learn how to build an emailing system just like gmail or yahoo mail.

Features includes

1: compose

2: Sent Mail

3: Inbox

4: Draft

5: Trash

I will be using session to ensure data persistence from one page to another.

my question is what do i have to enable or have in my account to be able to send and receive mails.

eg. Is it something like SMTP, POP3 etc or some other things else. I will also like to know there functions and its security issues

thank you

This exact topic is discussed in detail here at SO. The main advice is.. don't! Unless this is just something you wish to explore a little.

There may also be some useful tutorials here @DIC - click the Tutorials link at the top of this page.

Yea. Having had to deal with setting up a partial email (IMAP) reader myself recently, my advice would be: Use existing solutions. There are a lot of little pitfalls involved in correctly reading the various ways in which email clients compose emails. It's not something you'll want to be doing yourself unless there is absolutely no way around it. If you need a more custom solution than you can get with some of the more popular email software out there, you should at least try to use the core from one of the open-source project to avoid having to recreate it.

Like Yahoo? Yahoo uses qmail, which is a mail transfer agent. So yahoo mail is just a front end webmail client for a pop mta.

I think you're trying to build something more elaborate than it needs to be. Install an mta first, & then see if you still want to build the entire project.
