oh oh oh, let us also not forget that the ACA WAS a concession to the republicans over the single payer system that they wanted.

Australia had an interesting way of handling a shutdown in the 70s.

Well, what do you think? How much business, foreign and domestic, do you think the U.S. does in 3 weeks? How much money per minute is spent in Afghanistan alone?

There's no indication that any of that will change, even the TP supplies will survive. Apart from sustaining a U.S. military presence, the U.S. Gov't isn't required for any of that to happen, and U.S. military obligations and presence will continue today and tomorrow just as they did yesterday. Governments don't make business happen. They do more to get in the way than they do to facilitate it.

The republicans were "voted" into office to protect the interests of the people who voted them in office. It is NOT their responsibility to cave.

Whoa whoa whoa. Slow down there, speedy. This is the problem with Republicans. As the other side routinely points out, they enjoy living in a fantasy world. The Republicans were NOT elected. Americans cast 1.4 million MORE votes for Democrats in the house of Representatives in the mid-term elections than they did for Republicans. Yes, Americans wanted a complete Democrat majority in government, but as usual, Republicans cheated.

I always liked CGP Grey's series on voting, one of which is on gerrymandering:

Edit - You could have at least went with an NPR article or Huffington Post.

Their gerrymandering is not opinion! I like how FACTS have even become debatable these days...

That's the biggest problem, there is no budget, there hasn't been one for over 5 years.

I beg to differ on this point here. There is a budget passed every year as the government can not be run without one. You only hear about budget issues when someone gets a bug up their arse and pulls crap like this shutdown. The government does not run on a 6 or 7 year fiscal cycle, it runs on a yearly fiscal cycle. This means a budget must be passed every year or we risk a shutdown. The fiscal cycle for the federal government is October 1st to September 30th every year. Here is a link where this info can be validated.

There has not been a budget passed in over 5 years. The government has been running via a series of continuing resolutions, not a budget.
