Best Game Development Language

Posted 02 October 2013 - 05:27 PM

Hi there,

My friend and I are looking to start game development (start with pixelated 2D games such as Terraria).
I know there are a lot of these questions on the internet but nearly all of them have different answers...
I was just wondering, what do you think is the best game development language? I have done some work with Visual Basic in school and have a C# 2010 book and a C++ book, we have worked with XNA and have created a simple game which includes movement, collision detection and health.

We just don't want to start learning a language and then get to the point of realizing we have made the wrong decision of language.

Thanks, Daniel! :)/>

.. and you've looked at the pinned topics, and countless threads asking similar questions?

How would you make a wrong language choice? The goal of making a game is not the language but the process, right? As long as the language/tools are not eight years out of date - or some linguistic oddity - you can't go wrong.

Because of the ease of learning the languages, I'd go with either c# or Java. C# is probably a better choice.

You're on the right track. C# and XNA is the way to go. Afterwards you could use MonoGame if you would like to port to more platforms.

This is a thread I'd recommend reading. It's a great discussion we had on the forum.

There is no such thing. xD Except if you planned on using Pascal maybe. :P haha

Cheers!

I just started game programming, I'm starting with Visual Basic, then I'm gonna try C#, then I'll have my go at C++.
It also really depends on, what you want to learn, you can make a game with almost any language!

I agree, this is a smart progression of difficulty. Luckily for you, most all compilers will support the newer c++11 features which will make your life much easier when you decide to learn it. Be sure to look into newer texts(for learning: A Tour of C++ and for reference: The C++ Programming Language) on the subject when you do, as modern c++ looks quite different from "old" c++.

Best of luck.
