Newbie - My new Project - guidance and tips required please!

Posted 03 October 2013 - 08:23 AM

Hi all,

I'm very new to web development but have a fair bit of programming experience over the years (Java, C, C++, SQL) and have decided to embark on building a challenging (for me at least) site for a bit of fun.
I'm going to tackle each element in turn and learn the technologies/languages as required along the way.

The big picture features for my project are:
1) A multi-panel main page
2) User Management - Login/Logout/Session and Profile Management
3) In one panel a hierarchical/tree-like menu dynamically driven by the contents of database table(s)
4) In another panel a list of items (driven by database content) that can be re-ordered using drag and drop
5) In another panel a revolving (slowing moving top to bottom or left to right) panel of images (driven by external content or database content)
6) Other stuff (I think the above is enough to be getting on with)

I expect that the above will require a bit of everything - HTML, CSS, Javascript, MySQL, SQL, PHP (anything else).
I don't want spend months trying to develop something if I can just plug pre-built components together and tweak them. So any guidance on any of the above would be really appreciated.

Do you think the above is achievable? Should it only be attempted by WebDev geniuses?

Any other hints/tips/pointers greatly received.

Thanks for reading!
Warren

Okay - what about an exiting CMS? Drupal would work well.. less so Wordpress.

Thanks modi123_1, I took a look at wordpress and even installed it and had a play around. It seemed too geared up for blogs and not really a generic enough CMS platform.
Why would Drupal work well? Do you know of any plugins/extensions that may be of help to me? I'll take a look now but if you can give me a headstart that would be really appreciated.

Drupal is a less blog orientated CMS.. plugins and widgets are easy to make and use. As a CMS it deals well with the multiple users.. so yeah. a good choice.

I've read up on the basics of Drupal now and it definitely sounds much more suited to what I want to do. Now to install it and to gave a play...
Anyone got any suggestions regarding modules and themes I should look at?

There are a silly number of modules.. see what fits your paradigm and vision, and what doesn't - make!
