How old were you when you wrote your first line of code

Post icon  Posted 07 October 2013 - 07:15 AM

I was 15 years old, i wrote program that adds two numbers together on GW Basic. Good times :)/> That didn't last long, went to the PASCAL next.

How old were you when you wrote your first line of code and what was it?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 1

Depends on what you consider code. When I was 11, we got our first computer, which ran Dos 3.3, & as such I wrote some bash scripts. But I didn't start programming until 1996 when I goot into C. I started writing C code when I was 19.

I was 17 I think. First year in 6th form and I wrote a small VB program to act as a till system for a fake shop. Learnt a bit of C on the side of VB and then C# with XNA to learn graphics programming. Now I'm 20 and in my 3rd year of Uni doing Games Programming.

I don't know what I'd be doing with my life otherwise..

My first line of code was when my brother was in college, he helped me create a "Hello World" I was 11 I'm 22 now. I believe it was Java, but I can't really remember. It was fun though. After that I worked on and off throughout the years with different languages just as a boredom thing, then the first real program I made was in my Freshman year in High School. I made a program for the N Game that allowed you to choose enemies and where to place them (as well as custom enemies like spinning lasers). I did that in VB.Net and have been doing VB.Net since.

When I was 11 or 12, roughly, the local community college had a "kid's college" day where they did 1 day "classes" on various things. I took several of those "classes" and one of them was programming drawings using asterisks in BASIC. After I had learned the PRINT command, I thought I knew everything there was to know about computer programming. I dreamed of making games that only now I'm even getting close to a level where I could actually build them, but I was convinced I could do it back then.

So, I convinced my parents (really my grandparents) to buy me a computer for Christmas. And that's when I really got started.

My first program was the standard hello world, using Fortran IV in Junior High. Too long ago to remember my age.

Bash scripts are ok too, something that you wrote on your own.

EDIT: I did go through a period where I had to make boot disks for all of my games when I was a kid, but editing the autoexec.bat and config.sys files doesn't really count...

About 11 or so. Apart from the typical Hello World program, I also used to write cheats for games I had on the Amstrad CPC464, but other than minor editing, that was more just copying code from my computer magazines.

i was 16 when i tried to write a program. as far as i can remember. that was java. and that was also the very first language that i used to helped my mother automate her type of small business as a payback for sending me to school and showing her how much i appreciate all her efforts being a mother to me.

that was about small lending business that prompts and check all the payments and overdue.

we're not on a good relationship right now but i always thank her everyday of my life for doing all those things that she did for me.

now im still coding and trying to cope up with technology and will never get tired to be on the mood of learning rather than assume to be an expert when i know there are really alot of things i need to know...

just copying code from my computer magazines.

That is the only thing you could do to learn before the internet, maybe libraries had some books on programming, but that is still copying from paper.

That's true, but what I meant was more that my code wasn't really original code. It was, basically, copied with a few variables altered to see what would happen.

I know exactly what you mean Bort, i did the same thing i copied code from my elementary school teacher that he wrote on the blackboard and the tinker with it to see what it does.

I was either 14 or 15, can't remember which. The language would have been Javascript.
