Clarification on float containment

Posted 09 October 2013 - 07:15 PM

Hello, I'm a bit new to CSS layouts and I'd like a little clarification on float containment. I'd like to know why using the overflow property with hidden and auto values wraps the outer element's content/padding around floated elements. I'd also like to understand why floating the outer element would also contain the inner floated elements.

I understand clearfix since it clears the next element. This makes sense to me partially because I can see that the inner element is protruding outside of the 0 height outer element so it would seem that it is as though its being treated as its own block. I just don't understand why it ever wraps the inner elements.

I hope that made a bit of sense? If you need me to clarify my question I can provide an example if my question wasn't clear enough. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
