search engine problems and changing background colour

Posted 19 October 2013 - 02:36 PM

Hi we have a website www.katymays.co.uk but are having the following problems we need advice on please;
1. A Google search can find our website but it first finds our about us page not the home page- why?
2. An internet provider search (such as talktalk powered by Google) cant find our website!
3. The background colour should be gradient grey but on many browsers it shows as solid black giving us problems with our text.
4. The page doesn't resize to different screen sizes.
any help gratefully received.

I can't help you with the first 2 questions, but I suspect that your vendor-specific gradient-rules (or one of them) is incorrect.

Cross-browser css gradient

4. The page doesn't resize to different screen sizes.

What strategy have you adopted that would make the page resize?

Hi, thanks for your advice,
we are a new business and paid for someone to do our site for us but now we can't get him to correct these problems, we are trying to learn how all this works ourselves but this obviously takes time and we can't afford to spend more money on this so any help we can get will be very much appreciated.
I can't answer your question about the resizing strategy as we don't fully understand it all yet but I get the feeling that he hasn't put anything in place - is there a way we could correct this? somewhere we can go to learn how to recode for resizing?
Thank you again. Katymays.

Changing a fixed layout to a liquid (or fluid) layout can be a challenge, and requires good knowledge of css. Sometimes it is easier to start a new page but, of course, copying across the main content - text-blocks and images.

I you want the page to also work on tablets and different mobiles then this is called responsive web design.

If you want to get up and running with HTML and CSS then htmldog is quite good. tutorialspoint is quite good as well, as are a number of other sites.

I really like the book HTML & CSS: Design and Build Web Sites by Jon Duckett.

If your current knowledge is limited then there is no quick-fix I'm afraid.

Hi just to update you. I have admitted defeat I won't be able to correct mistakes myself so have found someone to start it again for us, borrowed some money to pay for it and am hoping for better luck this time round. Thanks for all the help and advice.
