Negative Reviews

Posted 21 October 2013 - 10:24 AM

I don't like Negative Review but sometimes I think they are necessary.
Every time I try it says I have already used my quota when I have not replied to a single one.
I am pretty sure my account hasn't been hacked what is going on

You may not have enough posts to give downvotes. Certain user groups can give more downvotes than others, to curb some abuses in the rep system we have seen.

As long as you understand what they're there for. It's not a "I don't like you" button, nor is it an "I disagree" button. It's there to mark down unhelpful or blatantly wrong answers. A good time to use it is when someone says something like "just google it" or gives an answer predicated on a false idea. A bad time to use it is when someone tells you to provide more information, or when someone gives you a dose of reality you weren't interested in hearing. Remember, just because something sounds impolite doesn't mean it was intended that way; people here are from many different nations, and English is a second, third, or fourth language in many cases.

I'm not suggesting you were going to use this incorrectly. I just want to make sure everyone understands why we have Reputation buttons.

Tell that to the people in the Lounge :)

Lounge goes by slightly different rules with rep, however if you see anything you consider rep abuse, feel free to send a report on the post, or a PM to any staff member (dark blue or green badge).

The lounge tends to operate on the following rep system:

+1: That was funny, insightful, or otherwise something I agree with
-1: You're being a prick

Act like a respectable human being and chances are you won't get downvoted there. Well, at least not now that it's settled down quite a bit.

Additionally, Lounge rep does not count toward site-wide monthly rep points. For example, if you check the Lounge, I have 91 rep for October. If you check any other board on the site, I have zilch. Yes, it counts toward your main total... but it doesn't count toward anything else. High Lounge rep is basically just a way of saying "Look at me! I'm the biggest asshole this month!" I often find myself in the top three. I still think we need an award for this. Just sayin'.

How would the award be classified?

  • Has strong opinions
  • Is very clever?
  • Is too clever?
  • Won't let it go!!

Could be the start of another extended discussion :whistling:

It would either have to remain completely neutral (if this is possible..?):

Contributed to the lounge

or my list could, I'm sure, be easily extended to 20 different classifications - but no naughty words!

Added: Instead of the +/- buttons there could be 20 alternatives ;)

@andrew - are you talking about having a whole host of meta moderating tags (no more plus/minus) to slap on a post - akin to how slashdot does it?

Quote

Normal
The default setting attached to every comment when you have moderation privileges.
Offtopic
A comment which has nothing to do with the story it's linked to (song lyrics, obscene ascii art, etc).
Flamebait
Comments whose sole purpose is to insult and enrage.
Troll
A Troll is similar to Flamebait, but slightly more refined. This is a prank comment intended to provoke indignant (or just confused) responses.
Redundant
Redundant posts add no new information; they take up space with information either in the original post, the attached links, or lots of previous comments.
Insightful
An Insightful comment makes you think, or puts a new spin on a given story. Examples: an analogy you hadn't thought of, or a telling counterexample.
Interesting
If you believe a comment to be Interesting (and on-topic), it is.
Informative
Informative comments add new information to explain the circumstances hinted at by a particular story, fill in "The Other Side" of an argument, etc.
Funny
Choose "Funny" if you think the comment is actually funny, not just because it seems intended to be.
Overrated
Sometimes comments are disproportionately up-moderated—this probably means several moderators saw it at nearly the same time, and their cumulative scores exaggerated its merit. (Example: A knock-knock joke at +5, Funny.) Such a comment is Overrated.
Underrated
Likewise, some comments get smashed lower than they might deserve. Choosing "Underrated" means you think it should be read by more people

Well I didn't say we had to use /. 's words, but I was more interested in if I had the idea for the process right. Meta tag and not rep posts.
