Laptop RAM and the differences between 8GB or 12GB(1x4,1x8)

Posted 06 November 2013 - 06:37 PM

I was recently trying to play a game COD:GHOSTS although it requires a total of 6GB of RAM. Since I only have 4GB I thought it would be a good idea to buy another 8GB stick to go with my 4GB stick. The difference is an extra $30 for the 8GB stick, so I don't really care which one I get. I want to play games on high settings and do a lot of 3D rendering with my computer so I was wondering if It mattered to have 8 or 12GB of ram. Also, will all DDR3 RAM fit in the same computer? I worry about the chip not fitting my laptops chipset. Thanks.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

What's the laptop model? You can go to the manufacturer's page and find out what type of ram (DRR2, DDR3, etc), and what the max RAM capacity of your laptop is..

Outside of that yes.. any RAM should fit.

Are you sure you have two slots, and not just one? Again - manufacturer's page.

Honestly the RAM won't be the crucial part as much as the video card. Eights a solid place to be at, but probably negligible difference with twelve.

Im sure I have 2 slots I just opened my laptop and there was the 4gb on the botom and you could see there was room for 1 more stick of RAM.And I have a GEFORCE GT 650M - 2GB NVIDIA video card. As for the model, im not sure where to find that because the site I got my laptop from (ibuypower.ca) doesnt sell this model anymore.

Okay.. so you don't know what your lap top is called? It should be plastered near the keyboard or screen bevel .. or on the bottom where it tells you serial numbers, etc. .. or go to their website and find it.

No there is no provider like DELL or anything.. ibuypower uses custom cases. but I have a 64 bit OS so I know I can use the 12GB, and I have DDR3 RAM already in my laptop.

This is the RAM I was looking at. Also, the site no longer sells this laptop.

*sigh* Yes.. I know it is not a Dell, but there is a model number on it.. I assure you.

So it's not a "battalion" or "valkyre" or "white box" or what ever? Nothing with a number like "M1771-1" on it?

Notice when you go to the driver's page.. click laptop.. then the next combobox is full of model numbers..

All I see for model is model: QAL51... but when I log on to the account I used to purchase the laptop it no longer apears in my order history.

I beleive it was the Battalion 101 something thats all I remember, It was

http://www.ibuypower...8-Gaming-Laptop where this laptop now is but they upgraded the components since I bought from them. Like the 750m instead of 650m

Ah.. okay.. well there goes me trying to figure out your motherboard.. so. .sure.. let's work with the assumption this laptop isn't five years old and can handle more than eight gb of RAM... and works with DD3.. Go.. pick up your ddr3 stick.

.. and your start->control panel -> system doesn't tell you?

At worst your laptop doesn't take more than eight gb because it's old.. so you'll just use the one stick.. at best you can use both... and I won't bother trying to match up RAM transfer rates..

I also notice that im a notebook and not a laptop when I goto control panel -> Hardware and loop at my comp. Will that mean anything? Because I know im a 64 bit which assures me at least 16gb since I know this laptop is only about a year old.

Personally I would twin the RAM chips, I've heard it's unhealthy to pair off odd-types like 4 with 8, 6 with 8, 4 with 6.. If you have one 4GB chip, pair it with another 4GB. 8GB of RAM is still plenty.

To expand on the answer Flukeshot gave, make sure the speed and voltages of the RAM match. All DDR3 are not created equal, if the ram you have in your laptop runs at a certain speed, voltage, make sure the new stick has the same specs.
