Becoming an Oracle Certified Java Programmer before graduating

Posted 22 November 2013 - 02:13 PM

Do you guys think its possible? I'm an incoming sophomore and currently have all the time in the world to study until May since I'm in a leave of absence right now. I'm not saying I'll take it before my break is over but is it possible to take it say.. in my junior or senior year?

Is this a bad idea? If I fail on my first try will it have a record? I heard its not quite expensive compared to other certifications and will definitely boost my chance of landing a good first job (not including the internships). Is it that hard? Cause I seem to notice mostly people who already graduate take it.

Can't seem to edit the poll.

Many things are possible. Just because you have the time (which you've mentioned a few times before) does not mean it is more plausible.

Why would it be a bad idea?

I am certain they would have records of you taking it.. yes... no if anyone cares to back check that outside of the passing one - that's debatable.

Is it that hard

Depends.. I have no idea who you are, what you know, what your skill level is, motivation, etc.. For some I would imagine yes.. it was hard.. others - not so much. How about purchasing some practice exams and see how you take a run at it.

Study material.. cover topics they mention.. etc.

I'm in agreement with Lemur. Certification is one thing, but a portfolio and a working knowledge of the language is better. Focus more on projects and doing, and less on pieces of paper.
