Can someone look over my potential build?

Posted 27 November 2013 - 11:57 AM

Hi guys,

Just want to get the opinion of the community on a PC I'm about to build. I don't stay "in the loop" when it comes to PC parts, so I may be way off on some of these. But I'm going for a powerful PC that can run multiple VMs at the same time, while also being able to run modern games at max.

Here's the build:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4820K 3.7GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Corsair H110 94.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Asus P9X79 ATX LGA2011 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Crucial M500 240GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti 3GB Video Card
Power Supply: Rosewill 1000W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
(Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-11-27 13:55 EST-0500)

It's missing a HDD, optical drive, and case. The first two, I already have, and cases I want to look at and handle before I order one.

Any suggestions on things to change? Did I miss anything? I'm partial to Nvidia and Intel, so I probably wouldn't switch to AMD chips/cards.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

I would honestly go for the haswell chip.. it's newer and has a bit more on the bells and whistles.

Intel Core i7-4770K Haswell 3.5GHz LGA 1150 84W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics BX80646I74770K
$319.99

Intel Core i7-4770 Haswell 3.4GHz LGA 1150 84W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics BX80646I74770
$309.99

(the ####k versions are for overclocking)

Any reason you are going liquid cooling? How about air?

Motherboard - would advocate changing if you go haswell.

RAM - sure.. looks fine. maybe go for two eights since the board you mentioned can go up to 64gb

Nice SSD drive.

FFS - that is one expensive videocard. What are you planning on playing with it? If you need to reshuffle money I would maybe scale back a few releases and reallocate elsewhere.

Not a large fan of rosewell.. typically go Corsair.. but sure..

I chose that processor because it has more PCI Express lanes (40 vs 16) which might come in handy when/if I SLI. Also I've read that the Ivy Bridge chips overclock better than the Haswells do.

I would go with 2*8 ram, but I can't find 8gb DIMMs with the same timings. Plus, this board and ram support quad channel, so going with a matched set of four isn't a bad idea, I think.

As for the GPU, I might step that back to a GTX 780 instead of the 780TI. Not sure the small gain is worth the $200. But to answer your question, I want to be able to drive either a 1x2560x1440 display or a three-monitor setup. Not sure which, or even if I'll do it, but having the option is nice.

I love this part. Finding everything I need. Doing the actual build is such a pain :P

Odd.. I can't seem to find anything indicating ivy bridges has 40 lanes.. I keep seeing 16 for them as well.

fyi - regarding your RAM CAS:

It's the Ivy Bridge E one's, apparently.

That's pretty reasonable for the ram, probably will switch to those.

If anyone wants to see the finished build:

I used an Corsair Air 540 case. Most of the components are the same as listed, except the PSU. Amazon sold out of the one I was going to buy, so I grabbed a similar one at Fry's.

That it does. What's really nice about though is that it separates some of the components into a different chamber so as to not impede airflow. The DVD drive, PSU, and SSD are all in one side, everything else is on the other. I think I'm going to move the HDD over too. Keeps everything clean and cool. It trades vertical space for horizontal. I really do love the case. I think I'm going to put some tacky green lights in there. I'd actually recommend it in a heartbeat; it was about as easy to work with as a case can be. So much room for activities!

You'll need a chair as well, although you can probably sit on the case ;)
