Number one thing, by and far: Go out and develop something non-trivial.

Would creating a GUI based program that teaches the user math (such as Algebra or some parts of Calculus) be worth wild to bring up in an interview? If so, do you think they would care about the complexity of the code or if it just gets the job done?

Once I was asked "How would you do X using Y?" I didn't know the answer so I guessed (incorrectly). I wish I had said "I don't know, so I would google it."

wothwhile* (Grammar would be a great first step there mate.)

Teach math? Is that your passion? Is that what makes you excited? If not pick something else.

For me at a recent hackathon it was getting my art published, so we made an application to allow local businesses to loan art out from local artists, and allow it to get purchased. Win win. We solved a problem we had, and we made it work.

Find your passion, and do it.

Most people want to see that you're trying to do something epic, rather than being too timid to try anything.

Well, you'll have to face it somehow. Maybe its because people get nervous on interview occasions. Well, that's normal I think.
