Re: New Year Resolutions

Posted 16 December 2013 - 12:45 PM

The way things are shaping up right now, 2014 is going to be a year of big changes for me professionally. I'm resolved to being much more pragmatic about professional opportunities and less idealistic. The old saw of "if it sounds too good to be true" bit the everloving shit out of me this past year and I'm straight up done with that shit.

Just this past weekend I noted that this time last year, I was running in the mornings. By now, I had healed from my first bout of shin splints and was well on my way to my second dose of the same. I miss running because it was one of those activities that forces you to push past your own limits. I had and still have the desire but my damned shins won't stand for it. To that end, I've also resolved to wait til around April or May for when people start listing all the Xmas exercise gear they got and then discovered they lacked the willpower to actually use. I'll locate something that I can use that doesn't rely near so much on my rebellious lower legs for my exercise and aerobic needs.

I am with supersloth on this one. You really should just make a resolution on a date and do it. No need to make sure it is Jan 1. But having said that, I have chosen to make that date for several of my longest lasting resolutions. I use the opportunity to make one then, but I also make others throughout the year. Come this January 1st I will have gone 6 years without having a soda pop. Just the amount of sugar alone I have saved in that time is mind boggling.

I might set another one this Jan 1. Just not sure what it will be yet since I already eat pretty well, go to the gym regularly (for the last 8 years or so) and learn all types of new things. Maybe show more compassion because I can be pretty black and white when it comes to things of the heart at times. But that is really tough thing to keep.

:)

I'm going to start a chain using Jerry Seinfelds method to learn something new related to software development every day.

Doesn't matter how big or how small, I will not break the chain.

I also will try to stop working at 8pm sharp and get off the computer to spend more time with my kids. I work exclusively from home, but still - sometimes I feel like I'm missing out on them.

I might have to jump on sloth's bandwagon after all. I don't think Operation: Fat Ass can wait till after the holidays. I had to lay down to zip my jeans this morning.

Re: New Year Resolutions

My new years resolution is the same as every year, Don't Die. Every year I have achieved this so far, except when I had my heart surgery when I was 4 but I didn't even know what a new years resolution was back then so I don't count it. So at the end of every year I live I can say I achieved my new year's resolution and get that warm happy feeling of accomplishment, and if I fail at my resolution chances are I won't even know it! :D

Quote

“And someday when the descendants of humanity have spread from star to star they won’t tell the children about the history of Ancient Earth until they’re old enough to bear it and when they learn they’ll weep to hear that such a thing as Death had ever once existed”

Bonus points for guessing the quote source (no Googling now)

Re: New Year Resolutions

Posted 18 December 2013 - 09:59 AM

Now that I've had a few weeks to recover fully from my bought of Gastroenteritis as well as wrap up school, I'm trying to get back in the gym more. I could have easily stayed 'burritoed' in my warm bed last night reading a book, but chose to get up and go to the gym; powered through my workout in the 45 min before it closed.

I used to hit the gym sometimes with a BodyBuilder my mom used to work with (this guy was a Giant/Ripped/Health Freak). One piece of advice he gave me was to try and keep your set intervals between 30-45 seconds to keep heart rate high. I tried it out last night since I was in a time crunch anyway and was thoroughly surprised just how quickly I completed my workout compared to my normal hour (35mins).

Since I stopped working out so regularly with school and my gym partner moving away for new employment opportunity, I lost a lot of my previous strength, but on the weight scale have only gone up about 4lb. My official start date was yesterday I suppose, but my goal is to try and drop down about 15lbs by March (placing me at 250). I seem to build muscle more than I lose weight due to mainly working with weights rather than cardio, so I'm going to up my use of gym's stationary bike (can read) and track. I'm also trying to get some core workouts into my routine to prepare for Snowboarding in January.

Besides this, I don't have too many goals for the new year. I'm pretty frugal already, but want to save a little more to take a trip out to Las Vegas and see my Brother (stationed in Air Force). January is gonna be a busy a financial drain though. I've already got a Casino Trip on the books with the folks the weekend after Christmas. Then on the 11th/12th a buddy of mine is playing in a WSOP Satellite with a $365 buy-in. Sadly I'm not good enough at poker to throw that kind of money down, so I'll be going to support him and play some BlackJack ^^ Then the next weekend the girlfriend and I are heading to Snow Creek for some Snowboard Action.

So many things to choose from...

- Increase GPA, I'm at about a 3.5 right now, I'd like to see that higher. I know that ultimately it doesn't matter much, but I believe that I'm better than the grades I've largely received so far in my life. Do not do anything uless you plan on doing it well.

- Keep up on school payments. Hitting the max on student loans and having to pay out of pocket bites. I've had to reduce the class load and extend out my expected graduation in order to keep things affordable. I wish that I had paid more attention to amounts and such when I first started school, perhaps I wouldn't be in this position.

- Actually gain proficiency in programming (any language at this point). I've spent a lot of time in the last few years dabbling, and learning things. I still feel that there are so many things I simply do not get. And even basic things at that. I know that I know more than some people (mostly those that have never done any coding), but I do not feel I am where I necessarily should be. I seem to struggle with understanding some of the terms....

- I want to complete some personal projects this year. I keep meaning to work on things but allow myself to become distracted with school and life in general to the point that the projects are left collecting dust. 2014, this changes.

- The biggest and arguably the most important resolution is to adopt. My wife and I cannot have children naturally. We have started the process of adopting and expect to have placement on a child (or children) within the next 4-6 months. This will be the beginning of the greatest adventure of my life. It is one of the few events in life that I would gladly allow to interfere with school or personal projects. I've wanted to have children for a very long time. I am so happy this is finally about to change.

I need to focus more on things, specifically with projects. Sometimes I start doing a project, and then for some reason or another I just stop and start another and don't finish. So next year, I'm going to try different approaches to try and break this habit and see what works best for me.

My new years resolution is to drink more. Between school this spring and a massive project that has consumed most of my time for months, I haven't gotten out nearly enough. So I'm gonna fix that.

I came up with one that kinda encompasses a lot of my other goals: take more time caring about my personal appearance and such. I'm gonna floss at least once every other day (as opposed to like never :x), take more time working out, once I lose some weight buy some cute outfits, and, for the love of the gods, take more time doing makeup. I've gotten so lazy lately that my whole routine has been just BB or CC cream, a few dabs of concealer, brow pencil, mascara, and blush. I dig the whole no-makeup makeup, and that's sorta what I go for for work (no sense primping for nothing), but even that's not nearly as polished as I could look. When I look good, I feel good. Bah.
