anime afternoons

Posted 27 December 2013 - 12:06 AM

wassup yo. I got some time on my hands so I've been watching tv and kicking back.

I wanna know some good anime. And not that flowery "kawaii" stuff, I'm talking artsy like Hayao Miyazaki or kick-ass like Afro Samurai (Seriously, the world needs more anime with RZA beats!)

Let's hear it!

Miyazaki is probably in a realm of his own. However, for similar quality I'd recommend Satoshi Kon.

For kick ass... well, most things with a ninja in in will have some level of bloody violence. If you've never seen it before, Ninja Scroll should do it for you.

Ninja Scroll (as previously suggested) & Ghost in the Shell are the only 2 anime that I can stomach. Everything else, imo, is pretty much run of the mill.

I'm not a big fan of anime generally, but Neon Genesis Evangelion is monsterously good. Very psychological, and who doesn't love Mecha vs Kaiju?

None that I'd recommend more than that.

For less serious but still kick ass, though - Slayers is pretty solid.

Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Deathnote, Ruroni Kenshin or however the fuck you spell it, Samurai Champloo, Ninja Scroll, Akira, etc. So many good ones.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is good, I'd agree. Who doesn't love giant robots/monsters/whatever-the-hell-they-actually-were kicking the crap out of ugly ass angels.

Is it just me, or do those Sailor Moon chicks look like small 12 year old girls from the waist up, with the legs of tall adult super-models?

I suppose one could argue that. With two small exceptions.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is... classic Japanese odd, I guess. For the first few episodes it's basic mecha land. Then, someone goes off their meds and starts channeling their therapy sessions.

I have a theory of anime that most would be significantly better if they just threw out the last few episodes. It's almost a formula: the story moves along in a reasonable fashion, only to be revealed at the end that everything you saw before was... something else entirely. And yet, I watch to the end just to see how much they're going to screw with me.

Death Note is satisfying. The second season gets slightly more muddled than the first, but finishes well.

Fullmetal Alchemist is good. Both versions. Second is more epic, first is cleaner. It sometimes helps with anime to recall that they Japanese don't think of Nazis as particularly bad guys. :P

That's how I watched Sailor Moon. I would cry and kick and scream if mom didn't have me home by 4pm so I could watch it.

Also have to recommend Death note and Full Metal Alchemist, both are awesome. Right now I've been watching Psycho Pass and Requiem From The Darkness. Psycho Pass is pretty good from what I've seen. Requiem From the Darkness is a bit unusual, but I have to say I kind of love it for that. Definitely one of my faves now. If you want something slower that gets itself moved along without the need for much action, House Of Five Leaves was also good.

Oh, And Ghost In The Shell because it's my favorite.
