Isometric Tile Based Rendering Tutorial in Java

I'm working on a project in Java that I would like to display isometrically, the idea is essentially a rudimentary simulation much like simcity but in a more confined space with just people milling about and some causing chaos.

I've chosen 2.5D isometric as the way to do as it's easier to produce and render than 3D in Java and doesn't take as much time to learn how to do let alone all the 3D maths that would need to be taken into account if I went 3D.

As I've never done any rendering of the like I'm not sure where to start or even how to. Does anyone have any tutorials that take you through from start to finish an isometric world in Java? could even be as simple as rendering the world, putting a character in it, and ensuring he can move about and collide correctly with objects. That's really all I need to get started.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I think 2.5d is mainly a graphical illusion done in 2d. So it wont be much different than doing standard 2d.

I've come across some XNA isometric tutorials (C# is fairly similiar to Java so you'll probably be able to pick up some concepts from it).
