It depends.. though I would imagine some php and a database would get you where you need to go.

It depends on the site. There's a myriad of ways to approach a dynamic webpage... but as I said - a database table that contains all the data and a php page that loads up specific job posting (that have no expired) per some criteria (category, newness, etc) is a fairly straight forward task.

Frameworks are more of an idea than anything else. At the base level they are still just PHP. A Framework is someone's idea of how best to organize & structure the layout of the website for easier coding.

Any framework that can parse the url (I don't know of any that do not) will be more than enough to use for a classified ads website, as I assume you want to use city & state as part of the url.

Yeah.. they should have a lot of similarities since that's their similar paradigm. If you want to know how they developed their site, and what framework tools they used, perhaps email them.

Again - this isn't much different, in application, from a CMS or blog site.

Where I am driving at is to build an app. I wanted to understand the functionality of these sites first before i could make an app. By the way I have seen a couple of craigslist apps. How is it possible to build these apps without administrative access to the site? is it where webservices come into play? I am very new to this web design world but i do understand a few things and can build something and this is what i want to do by the end of the year.

I am not sure why a webservice would be used.

Again.. these pages are not overly complex.

You have a database... in said database is a table of categories.. and a table of jobs.. and a table matching jobs to categories.

Your site's main page goes to the database and returns a list of the categories that are hyperlinks to opening up another php page which takes in a url value of the category..

That page just returns any jobs (from the job table) that match that category.

A straight forward two page thing.

Sure sure.. you can make a fancy admin page to add, update, remove jobs, etc.. or have a 'jobs details' page that takes in a url value of a job id and returns the information.. but that's all gold plating.

yeah i understand how it can be done, thanks. But how does one create an app that consumes content from another website like the way the craigslist apps do ? almost all of them are unofficail it means they dont have access to the servers or anything like that but they are able to pull the data and use it in the apps.

Correct. It's likely a web browser wrapper that takes the provided username & password, & interfaces with the website. Imagine if you had someone that was blind, & you just navigated the site for them, told them what was there, they gave you instructions, & you executed it for them. That's essentially what those apps do. Without an API, they likely just understand enough about how the site works (with $_GET array variables) to interact with it.
