Table with lots of columns

Posted 07 January 2014 - 08:49 AM

Hi guys,

I need to show the user a very large table (near 30 columns). At first I was thinking of using Gridview but even if it's the best way I'm not sure how to approach this, I mean do I do everything from the code behind ? What's the most efficient way to do this ??

Tables and columns - yeah, that would be the grid, and yes.. typically you would load that data in the code behind.

Thanks for your replies. Yes I know that's a lot of columns and I expect it will be slow to load but it's just for a few people who understand that and we'll see in the future if we can reduce the number of columns.

ahh is this for a company with many users? if so just because only a few people use it, doesnt mean that it wont f up the timing.

Here at work (company of over 200), we have a query that when it is run no one in the company can use our application for 1 hour because it is a major resoource hog.--- just some food for thought

For now it's gonna be for 3 users, but what I meant before is that they asked for all those columns and know that it can slow things down, that's why I'm not really worrying about that for now. However I do worry that it's gonna be a lot of work ^_^

If they really want to view 30 columns perhaps they should download the data into a spreadsheet ;)

Actually the idea is to get rid of the spreadsheet and having some columns updated automatically when a new row is added.

Well, just my opinion, but if they are getting rid of the spreadsheet, then they should also get used to the idea that what they are viewing is no longer a spreadsheet, and only view a sensible number of columns at a time.

But, hey, JMO ;)
