Jobs that allow you to work from anywhere as a skilled programmer?

Posted 11 January 2014 - 03:37 PM

I'd really like a career that allows me to travel, I was curious if being a programmer allows you to work from anywhere as long as you have internet and a good laptop. If so, what types of specific jobs would this be? What languages would be the most important to learn? I assume it would be some kind of out-source debugging work?

Thanks alot for any help!

Moved to the Corner Cubicle. This is not a C/C++ question.

It really depends on the company. If you look hard enough you can certainly find some companies that will let you work remotely. My first job was as a part time remote intern for Geni.com, though I was required to move to Los Angeles when I went full time. When I was recently looking for a new place to call home, one of my options ended up being a remote position with excellent pay. It's hit or miss, but definitely possible.

The languages you use aren't particularly important. Just learn the usual startup languages. Things like Ruby, Python, Javascript, Clojure, etc. There are no 'specific jobs' that would allow you to work remotely. Most tech positions can be done remotely by a good enough developer.

Normally it seems that you have to have a pretty good track record to work remotely, as a vast majority of those jobs seem to be wanting very senior people that may otherwise be unavailable (kids, don't want to move, etc.) The less experience you have, the less likely it'll be you find a remote job.
