Poll: Big Ideas, Little Expierience, learning java to earn $$ (pos (3 member(s) have cast votes)

In your idea, should i start with app development (small) then move on to computer programming? or start with computer programming, and apply my knowledge to Applet design. or should i not start small and go for a big project right off the bat

  1. Start with Apps (using Java if possible) (3 votes [100.00%] - View)

    Percentage of vote: 100.00%

  2. Start with web games and file games (by file i mean downloadable, or buy able, both through java) (0 votes [0.00%])

    Percentage of vote: 0.00%

  3. Start with a Biiig project, that will require time, but possibly an experience payout, and smaller projects would be easier, if you vote this i would like you to comment why (0 votes [0.00%])

    Percentage of vote: 0.00%

Did you vote it a 5 before someone voted it a 1?

well, recommend any books? I wouldn't know the specifics of what i require to be able to get to the point of self teaching, and "no holding hands" which is something that i found to be a helpful way to work, but i do understand why it is better to do it the harder way, to take the long route in order to be able to reach a higher understanding of the difficulties in my goal. I may have set it to high, would a better one be to earn your approval by reading and learning logic before coming back to ask questions?

Don't worry about my approval. Worry about learning the material. If you can learn it from a book, great. Taking an intro to programming class at your high school or local community college (not sure of your age, so no offense intended if you're not a high school student) is a great way to get a bit of instruction where needed, along with a book and some projects.

Again, you don't need to apologize for assuming, i am in high school, but i go to a charter school. so it is more based on teaching us advanced everything, like doing geometry in semester 1 (9th grade) and beginning trig in semester 2, so sadly we don't get electives, but there is a teacher that does it after school, but he teaches off the "codeacademy Teaching page"
so, there would be no difference there

I'd hit up your local community college if you wanted a class.

also, what do you mean by projects? do you mean there are actual logic "projects" that could help with learning? because i do prefer a goal, like code this, here is how, now do it yourself kinda thing, over a book that states; this is a string, this is a Boolean, here is a loop, now have fun!

You will get projects in a classroom setting that give you specifications of what you are supposed to create, and you figure out how to make it happen. An example of a small program would be to determine if a String is a palindrome. I listed a couple others in an earlier post.

also, i'll check that out, i don't know what type of courses they'll have, or the money required (not the richest kid, take note that i am running off 0.5 Mbps, so videos aren't the best option either)

well, you have given me a ton of options, but like i asked before, got any book ideas? you mentioned that it was a good idea to check one out.

I linked you to a thread where there is a big discussion on books. You can read that thread, the reviews online, and do the legwork.

I had a unique circumstance in learning to code. I worked through a syntax book while we were covering algorithmic problem solving in a class of mine freshman year of high school. So I was able to learn to problem solve while learning syntax. You're not in this situation, so my experiences here won't benefit you.

I didn't vote it down. However, when I see a topic where someone doesn't know their trade, & it's voted 5 starts, I assume that the original poster voted it & really it isn't a 5 star topic so I vote it down.

aye, i found the topic page, and i gotta say, you have given me new insights on the difficulties of starting tell me if this is what you were relaying, it is what i got:
  • Do not start with a big project
  • do not attempt making any games that require applied knowledge without learning basics
  • syntex is helpful, but logic is also required
  • sometimes learning takes more then ambition, but the want to accept that you cant take the easy route of "holding hands"
  • a helpful way to start learning; books and a possible course
  • that there are a lot of stubborn people like me ><

shoulda been a period after "starting"
