Is minoring in math useful?

Posted 22 January 2014 - 03:32 PM

I'm not sure if I'm posting in the correct place but...
I just declared Computer Science and I know that I want to work with computer graphics one day. Would you say that minoring in math is helpful?

Beats the hell out of something like English or Theology.

If you dig math, it'll be a lot of fun for you, and if you don't dig math, it'll force you to learn a bunch of stuff that'll be useful for you later on. So either way, it's going to help.

Math is all about solving, describing and proving problems, so studying it would be very beneficial to improving your programming abilities.

On paper, yes. Math is definitely a logical choice.

There is no clear answer. There are some programmers who go balls deep in to Calculus. Personally, I was only required to take Algebra and I do quite well as a software engineer. It really depends on you since different people get different things out of classes. You might also consider that you could spend 100 hours on a Math minor (studying, homework, class, etc). What if you just spent those 100 hours teaching yourself something?

Regardless, it won't hurt and it will look good on your resume (but it won't be the reason they hire you). I admit, I've thought about learning Calculus. How hard can it be? :stupid:
