gfycat and its uses

Posted 25 January 2014 - 06:44 AM

So I was doing the usual scan of random today and found the site gfycat so of course straight up I went and threw one together and went cool.

Then the thought came to me of were would I really use this?

If I work out an answer I will let you know but for now I would like to know were all you guys and girls would use this tool.

edit: seems it can not embed as an iframe on the forum :(

but here is my effort

This makes perfect sense to use on your own site. If a gif that you want is say 4.5mb like the gfycat uses for an example. Whereas the the video is 16 times smaller thats less that the end user needs to download from the gyfcat servers. I haven't read the the link in its entirety but I am guessing you can upload your own videos to make gifs.

Embed as an iframe? Do you mean embed as an image? If you do the reason is because gyfcat depends on a small script that puts the the html5 video into the image tag.

<script>
 (function(d, t) {
    var g = d.createElement(t),
        s = d.getElementsByTagName(t)[0];
    g.src = 'http://assets.gfycat.com/js/gfyajax-0.517d.js'; //this line sets g's src attribute.
    s.parentNode.insertBefore(g, s); //insert g into the page.
}(document, 'script'));
</script>

<img class="gfyitem" data-id="everyillchick" /> <!-- data-id is your user name -->

so that would be why you can't embed this into the form. But it is a useful service and is addressing a problem with animated gif's.
