Should I get a new motherboard + processor or just a new processor?

Posted 18 February 2014 - 07:59 PM

Hello,

I am a very avid gamer and I am looking to increase the FPS I get for all games. I am planning to upgrade to 16GB ram here soon and was wondering if I should get a new processor and/or motherboard to go with it.

Current MotherBoard: MS 7641
Current Processor: AMD FX-8100 3 Core processor

This build came pre built as I was too lazy and under funded to make one that would be amazing, so I bought prebuilt with a big case so that I could do what I want with it.

Any suggestions would be great :)

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

The first place to start would be a new video card. The GPU not the CPU does the grunt work in displaying what is on your screen. If you are using an ancient video card, or a video card with a small amount of on board RAM, then it doesn't matter how fast the CPU or amount of RAM you have. If after adding a new wizbang video card doesn't give you goosebumps while playing, then the next thing to do is add more RAM to your MOBO. Install the fastest RAM that your MOBO will handle. Next would be a fast hard drive. if you are an avid gamer, then that choice should be a Solid State Drive (Basically what us old timers used to call a RAM Drive). If after all that, then invest in a new CPU, a new MOBO to support the newer, faster RAM and CPU.

Side note - your processor info seems off..

The FX-8100 is a zambizi octo core, but your board says "64bit AMD FX, Phenom II X6/X4/X3/X2, Athlon II X4/X3/X2 and Sempron CPU." for tri cores..

Gunner's right.. A new, dedicated, videocard first.. then RAM (assuming you are not below 8gb and depending on the OS), and then think about a motherboard/chip upgrade..

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I am currently running a 2GB Radeon 7850 on 8GB DDR3 RAM.

So should I add another GPU first or replace it altogether? I was thinking either adding another 7850 + SSD Or a GeForce GTX 760, later adding another.

Then if I want more, new Processor + RAM? Or new MOBO?

Thanks :)

2GB Radeon 7850

Which brand?

When did you get it?

Check something out on the charts:

16gb of ram for gaming isn't really needed nor will it help that much. It would be better for a new chip and board.. but again I am not sure, exactly, what chip you have.

My GPU at the moment is AMD and I got it back in November.

Thanks so much for that website. No idea that it existed and will help in the future.

My CPU is this, pulled straight from system specs: AMD FX™-8100 Eight-Core Processor

So it's not a visiontek, gigabyte, HIS, or that?

Just one of these?

AMD FX-8100 Eight-Core Processor

So not a tricore.. okay that makes more sense.

Sorry, went off where I got the computer instead of in my own specs.

It's a PCS+ GPU.

So there is no dedicated card, but it is an onboard videocard?

I'm fairly certain it's dedicated. I can take a photo and show you if you like.

After some research. I have learned that my motherboard will not support a second GFX card. So I will have to settle for one or get a new motherboard.

I think for now I will settle for one and get a nice GeForce 600-700 series, then add a new motherboard if I ever need one.

Also, I will probably expand to 16GB RAM, eventually, and get a decent SSD for my operating System and keep my old SATA drive for Data. Thanks for all the information. Really helpful in pointing me in the right direction.

Thanks Again :)
