Sharpen Skills, learn more, work on something?

Posted 26 February 2014 - 07:52 AM

Right now as it stands my knowledge is very basic in:

HTML
CSS
XML
Java
C#
Objective-C

I could create a very mediocre project in any of the above but I would have to do some learning/searching a long the way. I couldn't do it all with my head alone.

I am currently in the military and I am looking to cross train into a IT job. I will then continue to stay in for another 15 years so when I retire I will have 15 years of experience. However I am looking for anything that would enhance my resume that would look better down the road.

Since those are the languages I have very basic knowledge in, should I start to just learn each more or should I continue learning the basics of other languages? Should I go more in depth with one and make something? What could I do that would benefit me and work as a strong point on a resume?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

To be useful at anything you need to go more than the basics, right? Knowing how to write 'hello world' in a hundred programming languages has little worth when you need to actually apply a language.

See above - having a handle on more than the basics, and knowing how to put simple parts into a more complex project would be beneficial versus reading first chapters on a hundred other languages.

Write projects, solve problems, have a github repository to show your code, chip in on open source projects, etc.

Should I start working with Java and start making projects and putting on a Github then?

Thanks for that. I have signed up at www.udemy.com and I am in a free Java class that has a lot of video tutorials. I will watch some of these and start to practice with them. Once I watch a few and feel comfortable I will move onto some of those projects.
