[Link] Github releases Atom, a text-editor for coders - The Next Web

Posted 27 February 2014 - 10:47 AM

Atom Editor by GitHub

I have signed up for the Beta but have yet to receive an invite. Looks promising and I am excited to give it a shot. Has anyone else signed up and tested/used it?

Looks not dissimilar to Sublime Text ;)

Looks pretty cool. I'd like if they had videos of it working. I also enjoy that there is a group working on vim control flow for it. That is something that will greatly reduce the amount of learning time I have (since I already use vim for my default editor).

Yeah, I agree that the UI is very similar to Sublime, but it seems a bit more slick. I like the plugin and config GUI screens that it adds. I also like that plugin screens do a version check and give you an install button to get the latest version. It's still very beta yet though because I couldn't get auto-complete to work on any of the file types I tried (js, html, less). I'm also noticing that some basic keyboard shortcuts from Sublime don't work (e.g. Cmd+Shift+D).

Hm, am a little sad... They are planning on making it a paid application, and from the looks of it they are going to charge "similar price to other similar editors out there." If they decide that sublime is similar, then it is looking like $70. That seems like a pretty steep price for a text editor, especially coming from vim (free).

Is sublime really that much better than vim? Or is it just different? Further, for those of you who have beta access to Atom, is it better than sublime? vim?

Must have details!

Essentially if you're already a Vim/TMUX power user there's no reason to switch. The only time I switch to Sublime is for Pair Programming.

The potential of easily being extensible is a nice feature and draw for me though. I recently attempted to create a vim plugin, it isn't easy to do in the least and not to mention that the language is completely different from anything else I program in. For that reason I have been keeping a close eye on neovim (which aims to bring vim into the modern world and allow for extensions to be written in any language that is capable of communicating over jsonRPC, which most should be). I am also trying to get an atom beta key, if not for Mac, then Linux or Windows. I think it would be fun to play with and who knows, maybe I'll fall in love with it.

Do note that it's Mac only as of right now.

Vim currently can be compiled with Ruby / Python support. You don't necessarily have to use Vimscript.
