Microsoft can't sell Windows 8, so it's giving it away

Posted 05 March 2014 - 02:53 PM

As per this article, Microsoft will be giving away Windows 8 in hopes that they can earn revenue from ads rather than sales.

I like to look at the usage stats :

Only 10.7% of PC users have Windows 8 or 8.1 installed, according to Net Applications.
Comparatively, Windows 7 commands a 47.3% share of the market, and 12-year-old Windows XP still has 29.5% of the market.
Windows Vista, an equally poor-performing Windows iteration, currently has just 3.1% market share.

I am currently using a Surface Pro and find Windows 8.1 to be perfect for tablet use. I could never see upgrading to 8.1 on a regular box. I do sometimes complain to myself that I can't sync or use apps seamlessly between my devices, but I get over that rather quickly when I think about Windows 8 as an OS.

Giving it away for free is probably not going to change anything.

That's my opinion of Windows 8. It is my belief that they wanted to be ahead of the game with laptops & desktops dying out. I think they just mis-judged an appropriate time frame.

I've had a few customers bring in laptops with Windows 8, but no tablets yet. & that's the agreed consensus, it's garbage & close to un-usable on a laptop/pc.

They should have given Windows 8 a sexy name. Continuing the theme of Windows Vista, Windows DisappearingOverTheHorizon ;)

Ohhh, I get it after I read the article. You said the Wii U itself was out-selling the Xbone, when that isn't the case, but all together Nintendo is outselling Microsoft.
