Band Website

Posted 06 March 2014 - 09:52 AM

I'm making a band website as a favor to a few friends, and to add to my portfolio. I was hoping you guys could check it out and give me some input on what might make the page look better:

Here's the link

The the logo is my work, but it's based off of their older logo, so I can't make many changes to it. Ignore the domain name, I'm temporarily hosting it on my website.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

It certainly is dark.

In IE there are borders around your social media icons.

Maybe you want to see about optimizing the
http://sixmugs.com/d.../album_hero.jpg so it is not a quarter of a MB big.

Typically the logo/banner is a link back to to the main page.

It's hard to see how the whole page will lay out - if the current page highlights in the menus, if there's a footer, etc.. I mean it's a few images slapped on a black background. It's all of 40 lines and little styling.. maybe get more done first?

The only criticism I have is the images load time. The center image took a long time to load on my DSL and it made it look funky until it was complete.

I would suggest to pre-load the images including the social networking ones and then show them on completion to avoid the slow line by line rendering of the images.

modi:

You're looking at the gist of it really. I haven't added the footer yet, but it's a pretty content-light site. I'm thinking the navigation links are probably just going to alter the message in the hero image instead of loading a new page. So I'm really asking for opinions on how it looks as-is.

It is very dark. I just opened my curtains and with the glare on my screen it looks even more so. I'll consider changing the background color of the sidebar.

laytonsdad:

I'll do that, thanks!

Images load instantly for me,

either you fixed that or I have really fast broadband...

Its dark but I like the main pic and its a band so black might be cool...

The logo I like the initial design but you need to jazz it up a little to catch the eye I think..

something like this might be nicer..

For only ~400K worth of images you do not need to preload these images so I would remove that. If you feel you have to have it, move it to the end of the body as placing JS in the head blocks the UI thread to start executing the script. Also, HTML4+ using lowercase tags, so LINK should be link. Also, comments in HTML look like this <!-- COMMENT -->, you currently have one at the the end that is missing exclamation point. Nice semantic markup, keep up the good work!

If the definition of fancying up is using anything in the photoshop filters or layer effects, you should probably get whacked for that nonsense. Depending on those is one heck of a crutch, just don't.
