Signature of the Month (April 2014)

Posted 02 April 2014 - 12:52 PM

Time for another signature of the month competition!

Last month's winner was depricated, for this signature in the 'space exploration' - themed contest:

Posted Image

depricated deliberated on a topic and decided:

-- Scenes from Literature --

He elected to clarify with "Scenes from Literature - an image that captures the essence of a scene from a story. For example, Of Mice and Men: George and Lennie sitting, talking, while George checks his gun. Or a Canticle for Leibowitz: a shopping list, "Pound pastrami, can kraut, six bagels - bring home for Emma" That sort of thing is what I have in mind. ".

Feel free to discuss what you may try your hand at. A 400x100 diagram of the three trolls Tom, Bert, and William, something from Dr. Sues, or even something more heady. It's all up to you!

Rules and important info:
  • The contest will run until the 28th of April after which voting will begin.
  • Signatures must not exceed 400x100px
  • They must contain your username.
  • When finished post the signature image on this thread.

Winners will receive this shiny userbar to display in all its 24 carat glory and the right to pick next month's theme.

Good luck!

Oh, and if you are thinking about participating it wouldn't hurt to drop a note here so I can harry those "down to the last minute" sort of folk when the deadline looms!

If you look in my 'about me' there is a section of all my past sig images.. Ms. Brisby one stands out as does the Last Unicorn one. Hmmm.. recycle those? Ha! No.. I kid. It's all about the OC, yo! That's original content to the muggles!

Off the top of my head I was thinking something along the lines of Winnie the Pooh.. or go super post-modern with a swirl of white on slightly-off white and calling it "Rose of Sharon: Breast Milk".. but I would have to dig out my black turtle neck and matching beret before I start. :D

Speaking of the Potter series.. maybe I should dredge up some bad /alt Potter fanfic! Muahaha!

I had the silly notion of going 'semi animated popup book route', but realize I don't have 'After Effects' nor the time for such an under taking. Perhaps as a side project to the whole thing.

Another alternative would be to push the bounds a bit and do something minimalistic, but complex enough to convey a scene. Like this:

... so many options!

I don't think this contest would be complete without an homage to the most shocking literary scene in recent history.

Posted Image

Edit: Couldn't resist making a few changes that were bugging me. And since I was back in Photoshop I added a tagline :)

I am not sure what that references ntwiles.. Game of Thrones, I am guessing? It's not in my wheelhouse of tv stories.. but I figure those who enjoy it may mean something.

You're right, it's a Game of Thrones reference. This particular one has become kind of a litmus test for GoT fans of either the book or the series.

Good choice Ntwiles. That was a truly epic scene in the book, and the TV series really did do it justice.

Definitely a great scene! I'd been looking forward to it since the series started, and I did a spittake during the Battle of Blackwater when Bran started singing the Rains of Castamere (iirc that was the episode that ended with someone singing it over the credits). It didn't have the same gravity to me in the TV show as it did the book, but there wasn't really much foreshadowing to it in the book and there was lots in the show. I was shocked, stunned, moreso than when Ned was killed in Book 1.

That said, I don't really get into the fan community - how has it become a litmus test?

I'm still pondering my entry.
