It's times like these I hate being on-call 24/7. I've had 2 hours of sleep and have been working for 3 hours now. On a related note, if you are on-call 24/7 do you think the company should provide you with a phone? What about a laptop?

Phone yes, but only a clamshell with a basic service plan. No reason to make that a bigger expense than it needs to be. Laoptop only if they expect you to work remotely.

I do work remotely when I'm called in the wee hours of the night/morning. My boss and his boss each get an iPhone through the company >_>

I spoke to my boss about this the other day, because my phone is being turned off in June and I can't afford my own plan without help, so I checked out T-Mobile and I can get a good plan with them for $60 a month. I asked if they would re-imburse me every month for my bill if it were cheaper on them that way instead of setting me up with a line through whatever service they use. He said he would ask his boss about it but he thinks they might have a line open which would be free.

I've worked at some places that provide the phone, the laptop, & to some extent even pay for internet. I've also worked for some that expect me to just be available. It comes down to negotiations during the hiring process, imo.

They pay half of my internet costs. I did negotiate that when I set up here, because I wasn't going to work from home if they didn't, instead I would drive my happy ass to work and they would pay for my travel expenses. They also pay for travel expenses when I have to drive an hour to the southern location.

BYOD is becoming a big thing, it seems. It's been a hotly debated topic here recently, too.

Nothing on the books today so training day and attempting to organize a coherent brief on why we need machine learning sifting through our data.

I'm a huge fan of our implementation of BYOD. They give us a $250 allowance for a new phone (and related accessories) every two years, and $80/month toward our bill.

h4nnib4l... I love the idea of BYOD. It cuts way down on company costs and keeps the employees from having to drag around and store multiple devices (These are my personal laptop, tablet, and phone. These are my work laptop, tablet, and phone.) But I also believe an employer should not be able to force the employee to use their personal devices for work purposes without some level of reimbursement (ie, my employer wants me to use my personal smartphone for work purposes... but they offer no allowances for new devices or to cover the costs of my data plan... hence, I adamantly refuse to use my personal device for work... it's an ongoing battle).

I've got a 3.5 hour graph theory test tomorrow evening, so I'm trying to knock out real analysis tonight. Homework is on the implicit and invertible function theorems. We're presently covering multivariable calculus proofs, treating the integral and derivative as linear transformations.

I like my company's BYOD plan - when I got hired at the new gig, they said "okay, go buy yourself a new laptop and send us the bill." So I have no problem using my personal device for work.

I don't really mind using my personal stuff for work purposes. I just want some recognition for the extra work I put in. I'm always trying to find ways to save the company money. I'm always helping out co-workers if they need it. I just want the same respect I give.
