I want to apologize in advance if this is in the wrong area.
I'm a CIS student, I'm wondering what type of certifications would be wise to obtain? I want to focus in software development but also would like to obtain a job in IT prior. I know for fact I will not walk out of school with the job I'm aiming for. I do however, would like to be well rounded.
Doing a bit of research I've come up with a large variety of areas where I could certify, but I also realize it would cost me a fortune. I'm wondering where I should start?
I do apologize, I know there's going to be different approaches to this, but I'm open for advice.

What do you want to do? This has been rehashed several times. Comp Tia certs are respected, Linux+, Security+. What do you want to achieve with them? Just for the sake of having some, w3c offers several cheap certs.
