What is business casual?

Posted 28 April 2014 - 09:18 PM

I'm starting a new job soon and the Hr lady told me to dress "business casual". I hate that term sooooooo much...I googled business casual and it showed ppl dressing really fancy imo. When I went for the interview, I noticed such a great range of clothes... From suites to jeans... I'm so confused as to what to wear!!!

I decided I'm just going to try khaki's with button up long sleeve shirts... What do you guys think? I'll tuck in my shirt on the first few days and then slowly start untucking it...

My company is a software company dealing in the financial sector. So it's like tech mixed with business.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

I'll just split the darn topic, slap a title and description on it, and remove the other response.

My immediate response is 'nut up and call the HR folk.. ask them'. My guess is there is a dress code written down and they will tell you. Hell.. over shoot and go for a suit. Scale as needed.

When in doubt, overdress. The worst then is you are being overly formal. That's better then looking trashy around people, and making that kinda first impression with your co-workers.

While I agree with, "Depends on the company." In most business circles, it means collared shirts and slacks. If the comapy is very relaxed, the last place I was at, they were fine with shorts, sandals, and a tee shirt.

Call HR and ask or look for a dress code in the handbook.

I agree with everyone else I would call HR and ask. Like others here that have replied, I have seen two meanings of business casual.

One company I worked for business casual meant button down shirt, slacks and nice shoes. The company I work for now business casual means "California casual" which they've just recently started throwing around that term. Anywhere you go will be a bit different just make sure whatever the dress code is you are comfortable.
