FON and BT have partnered to create the BT FON Community to cover the entire U.K. with hundreds of thousands of BT FON hotspots.
I'm not from the UK myself but I've heard of BT and they appear to be a major player over there in terms of telecommunications?
Check out the article on the FON blog - http://blog.fon.com/...tfon041007.html
The new BT/FON Website - http://www.btfon.com/
I think that this could be a big step in making FON very mainstream for public Wi-Fi access.

fon's wireless router they sent me sucks, seriously though.
maybe their next gen is better,
but yeah, the community aspect won't pick up in the us,
we're too spread out.

BT is British Telecommunications, the main telecoms provider over there... Kinda like AT&T over here.
But I agree with Tyler James Lee... The US is just to spread out to offer WiFi everywhere. It might catch on in big cities, and someone might pay to put it in all along interstates if enough major cities pick it up... But I wouldn't count on it.

Just got it in my inbox, pretty neat for the brits.
In a near, or not so near future, wifi will be available in a all civilized areas for free, supplied by either the govt or telecoms, most probably both. Or Google, as a part of their plan of global domination. Let's face it, interwebz is become almost as important as air, and will soon become a necessary service, hence supplied by state.
Problem here is cost. Through social networks like this, the cost is reduced because everybody shares the bandwidth, but implementation is much slower.
With a non-neutral web, providing internet everywhere would be VERY profitable to whoever supplies it, but non-neutral web is spawn of the Satan, so we now have to wait another couple of years.
</unstructured, pointless reflection>

Yeah, it really does. I liked my "1st Gen" Linksys router they sent me, complete with FON Firmware and a un-evenly cut FON sticker slapped on the top.
I gave away my new FON router to my boss, I think it's sitting on a shelf at work collecting dust. As for my old Linksys one, I still have it as I want to flash the firmware and make it into a useable router someday. I don't need it now but perhaps as a backup...
