As others have stated, it's easy to avoid pointless, vapid commentary: don't follow people who are guilty of tweeting pointless, vapid content. Don't follow mindless, narcissistic celebrities, follow experts in fields in which you're interested. We all should be used to perusing websites with annoying ads and just tuning the nonsense out; you have to do the same with social media. I'm not interested in every post of every person/organization I follow, but if you follow smart people and useful organizations, you'll come across enough good stuff that it's worth it. The self-imposed 140 character limit forces tweets to be small enough that it's very easy to determine whether or not each one is useful to you.

Oh, one other thing that I use it for, Jason Scott from Archive Team will post about new archive projects that need volunteers. If I'm interested I can then jump on irc or the website & read the details.

i noticed i basically use it as a forum replacement, because the beauty of twitter is it allows you to bring all of your interests into what is essentially one giant forum that's curated entirely for you. i've met a lot of great people on it, i love it.

if you don't, whatever. sometimes things click for people. i've tried rock climbing, i enjoyed it, but i don't do it every weekend. there's not some sort of regulation that says you have to use twitter just because you're on the internet.

I used to hate Twitter, refused to use it, but then realized that a lot of game company's do A LOT of giveaways/spoils via twitter. So I created an account so I could get free things :P. :alucard:

We could disagree with each other all day, but in the end, who cares? Good to see you are a Twitter fan. Don't kick me because i am not. :)

' & forums are different how? '

I never said anything about forums, you brought that argument up by yourself.

' I'm sorry, but no, you are completely wrong. '

Of course i am, you are disagreeing with me. :)

Logically speaking ' a person or people ' created Twitter, but realistically speaking. This Statistic Report says 44% of people dont even post to Twitter. That is a lot! And for those who do, its mostly babel about something they are selling or its used by celebrity's or people who are trying to make them selves look like they are something they are not.

So, the idea of following interesting people intrigued me. I already read Martin Fowler's bliki so I looked up his twitter. Some of his tweats were advertising his recent posts. Fair enough but I have already read those articles. Some were retweats. He did a decent job of picking interesting ones. But the real winner was links to articles he found interesting.

So, the end result was a mix of stuff I don't need and a few posts that had value. How does that compare to DZonne (the place I go to find articles from sites I don't already read)? It compares quite well. There is so much dross on DZone that I am lucky to find 2 or 3 interesting (to me) articles a week. To spend 5 minutes looking through his twitter feed and finding 2 or 3 articles that he has filtered out already is fantastic.

I don't know what I'll find if I expand this to include others. It could be great or it could just get so overwhelming that it's too daunting to trawl through it to find articles.

We don't really care that you're not. The only thing about this that bugs me is that you seem intent on spreading bullshit about it, simply because you don't like it.

Is it? Compared to what?

It's not at all unusual for a free service like Twitter to get a load of people trying it out, and then opting not to continue using it. It's the same thing for everything, including this forum. Even if we assume that only 25% of Twitter users are actually active (which is the lowest number I remember seeing in random blogs/news), that's still almost a quarter of a billion users.

Based on what?

Also, by the way, everybody is trying to make themselves look like something they are not. That's just how humans function. Twitter doesn't factor into that.

As a few others mentioned I use it primarily as a news aggregate feed, R&D updates, tracking some publishers, and the like. A secondary function is I track some folk here, and locally, on their minor updates and what not. A third function is tracking a few celebs, funny folk, artists, local bars, and clubs. My buddy advocates I should track porn starlets, but I would hate to have that scroll down one of my screens at work so I avoid their morning.. ah.. er.. selfies.

Good point. I myself, haven't use Twitter personally or in any direct way. I really do not see the point of it, the only good thing about them is the hastags and follow thingy... but that's achievable with facebook...

The only good thing about twitter is you are to follow the 'real' persona you are following.. that's all.. unlike facebook, where there are a lot of fake profiles for artists, or any public figure.

Yes, let's get more information on the intricacies of Twitter from people who think it's pointless despite never having used it. You basically just said "I have no clue what I'm talking about but please read it anyway."
