I had an account 5 years ago that I deleted. I followed one person (my cousin) and had one follower (the same cousin). Neither of us posted anything so I binned it. Recently my martial arts organisation started using Twitter to share news. I want the news so I have a choice between bookmarking the page or joining Twitter. I have noticed that some members of the organisation are also on Twitter and maybe I want to see some of their martial arty stuff. On the other hand, I see these people at least a couple of times a year, some of them several times a week.
So, my question to you is what will I miss out on if I just bookmark the page and don't join Twitter?
To put the question in context, I have an odd relationship with social networking. I tolerate Facebook for its private messaging and ease of sharing photographs. Most of the other features seem designed to clamour for attention on the News Feed (something that could have been fun but is unfortunately just a vector for memes and spam).
Go with joining. There are lots of neat little things that make having twitter enjoyable. Twitter is more of a place to get news where FB is more of a interaction with others site.... Give it a try and find out for yourself really...
Great question about: "Twitter: What;s the point?" I was speaking to my coworker a couple of days ago, he is a web developer, and he said he uses Twitter to keep up with the latest trends in Web Development, keep track of well-known online contributors of Web Development, and also keep track of the news.
Say, for exmaple, one of the biggest contributors on StackOverflow,Jon Skeet , has his own Twitter @jonskeet. He posts stuff often. Mostly regarding professional work, his blog, questions, stuff about the industry, as well as some personal stuff.
It's the key people that you want to follow on Twitter that you want to pay attention to. Maybe they more insight into a technology you have never heard of before, offer advice in the industry, or otherwsie have some interesting things to say.
I never had twitter, and I dropped facebook on April last year. Most people don't realize how addictive they are to social networks.
Today I read a news saying that in USA people started to call 911 because facebook went down.. />
