you'll probably want to post your query in either the C/C++ or Java forums - this area is mostly for first contact.
but my answer would be no. it would certainly be helpful to know c++ when starting out in java, since java is derived from c++, but it's not a prerequisite.

If you are planning on just learning Java by teaching yourself, I would say C++ is not required because you can start at the basics and work your way up.
If you are planning to take a Java course, you may want to get in contact with the instructor. I know the Java class at my university has our C++ courses as an unofficial prerequisite. The course starts off advanced and assumes you know your way around object oriented programming well.
So, my official answer is "It depends" haha. Welcome to </DIC>

I moved to Java from C/C++ and I found it extremely easy to learn since the syntax of Java and C++ code is similar. There was no need for me to learn OOP concepts again since its implementation in Java and C++ is almost identical.
But if you're learning Java as your first programming language, you're better off learning Java directly instead of learning C++ first.

Agreed, and I say every time a prayer for the complete lack of 2-phase compilation (and all of its loveliness - headerfiles anyone?)
