hi bubblebee_82, and welcome to </DIC>.

you'll probably want to post your query in either the C/C++ or Java forums - this area is mostly for first contact.

but my answer would be no. it would certainly be helpful to know c++ when starting out in java, since java is derived from c++, but it's not a prerequisite.

If you are planning on just learning Java by teaching yourself, I would say C++ is not required because you can start at the basics and work your way up.

If you are planning to take a Java course, you may want to get in contact with the instructor. I know the Java class at my university has our C++ courses as an unofficial prerequisite. The course starts off advanced and assumes you know your way around object oriented programming well.

So, my official answer is "It depends" haha. Welcome to </DIC>

If your goal is to learn object oriented programming then I believe starting in Java is better than starting in C++, as Java is almost purely object oriented. It Java borrows from Smalltalk more than C++ in that respect, although it does borrow a good deal of syntax from C/C++. However, learning C++ gives you an awareness of some of the lower-level details of the machine that you don't get with Java. These details are rarely needed, but if you're working on an OS HAL, embedded system, or something like that, it very important to understand the details of the machine.

Knowledge of C++ is not 'needed' as such but it helps a lot if you know C++.

I moved to Java from C/C++ and I found it extremely easy to learn since the syntax of Java and C++ code is similar. There was no need for me to learn OOP concepts again since its implementation in Java and C++ is almost identical.

But if you're learning Java as your first programming language, you're better off learning Java directly instead of learning C++ first.

I never used C++, and I am now a Java developer. It is not recommended to use Java as your first programming language, you may find it a little hard. Java is hard to learn when you never programmed before, but once you know its basics you'll find it easy to learn more and more.

I guess my perspective is a little skewed since I started with C/C++, but I'm surprised that anyone would think that Java is harder. I found the move from C++ to Java refreshing because of the syntactical goodies (at the time). :) Also, I barely have to think about memory allocation in most cases.

Agreed, and I say every time a prayer for the complete lack of 2-phase compilation (and all of its loveliness - headerfiles anyone?)
