Feedback on College Fest Site

Posted 08 October 2007 - 01:09 AM

Our deparment (Electronics and Communications) has put up a site for its fest. Just wanted some opinions.
Thanx. :)

P.S.: If possible, could you think of some better names for the events put up. There's a LOT of work left still.

Link : AYASKANTA. (It means magnet.)

I guess that was done because javascript is a longer word. We wanted a uniform size for each button. But I'll tell the team. Thanx. Do you have any design suggestions?

Well, honestly I'm confused why you need 3 versions of the website. The design across the board isn't consistent and theres a lot of stuff going on.

I think you need to define the style you want to go for and the content you want to offer... it seems like you are trying to cram everything you know how to do into these 3 websites.

Yeah, actually I felt the same as well. I've put that up with the web design team as well.

Marko is right I left the site very confused and still wondering what it is for...I think you should go back to the drawing board and get some organization

Yup. Point taken. I know this more of event organization rather than web design, but could any of you come up with some great names for the events. I know you all are superb at this :).

Hey ,

We've made minor modification to the website now...

We've dropped the flash page...

Just check the link again n give feedback...

Our aim in creating the website was plainly to give out info on the events, have online registration for the various events and have a forum for all of us to have a place to have discussions for the organization of the fest... n feedback...
we're not too keen on any other needs other than the functionalities mentioned above...

the reason for 2 versions is that html wud load much easier for slow internet users..

well i created the page alone in 4-5 days with lots of testing by others.. so lots of improvements still to be made...

And i'm pretty new to web designing... I Just started with just basic knowledge.. And learnt the rest during the course of building the website..
Also most of the events details r not ready yet... so those pages r empty
So any comments for improvement will be welcome..

Thanx in advance...

Web Development team

Also, are black backgorunds normally preferred or is it white? I personally think black looks good. Any advice on background designs?

What follows is just my opinion and it may not reflect that of everyone else.
  • I don't see the need to have a JAVA(script) Version and a Text Version. Most browsers support Javascript so you can use it anyway. If at all you need 2 versions, you can make a Flash and non-Flash Version. Not many PCs have Flash Installed. Infact I couldn't open your home page from my college computers since it has no Flash.
  • Maybe it's just me, but I find music (of any form) on any website annoying.
  • I think the pages are better off without the Circle Text Trail Animation. Websites should offer a simple, clear-cut and easy browsing experience. It should be designed by keeping the user's convenience in mind. It's not a platform where you should show off your coding skills (or copy-pasting skills ;) *kidding*)
It gives out a message like this: "hey-check-out-what-awesome-stuff-our-code-can-do"
It's also ironic that the Java Version does not feature the Text Trail Javascript animation while the HTML ONLY version does.
  • Try to use GIF Animations wherever possible instead of Flash equivalents. (I can see that it is already being done on some pages)
  • Visit websites of other Colleges in your region (and beyond) and learn from them.
And as far as the Event Names are concerned, be creative man...Stick to your own motto:"Innovation...Ideas...Fun". Put your thinking caps on.
And as everyone else said, you need to redesign the entire website from scatch.

All the Best with your College Fest :)
(wow, that rhymes)

P.S : I liked the name of one event : "TWISTED TRANSISTORS" taken from Korn's Song.

black is going to be less professional.
unless it is pulled off really nicely it just in general doesn't scream place of higher learning.

the redirect kicked me to the html page while i was trying to see what the flash was gonna do.

on a 1280 x 1024 the java page is just off.
the wallpaper shouldn't be tiled.

cleaning up the graphics will help alot.

black times new roman on a darkish-blue bg is hard to read,
i'd say if your gonna have text on top of that background, give it some kind of transparent cover or something, cause no matter what you put on that kind of blue it can be hard to read.

my 2 cents.
