Missiles?

Posted 12 June 2014 - 06:45 AM

so I follow a group of local historians on FB and to my surprise they posted about 150 images of old missile silos that are still in existence around my neighborhood. One house even uses one of the missile bases as a basement. These missile emplacements are huge with most being in 10000 sq ft mark or bigger but the only way you know they are there is by a small metal grate that covers the entrance. I am wondering if anyone else has ever found out that their neighborhood has such secrets?

Where I went to high school is an incredibly small town. Their local lake does not freeze, so there are ducks that flock there in the winter.

I was doing some research & history tells that the initial pilgrim inhabitants that settled there did so in the summer. When the Native Americans returned in the winter to the lake, they slaughtered the entire group of invaders that stole their land.

Yup.. silos in my vicinity. Two years back I took a summer trip out to see one.. Parts of complex were still visible, but most was over grown pasture for cows. Totes swords into plowshares sort of thing.

Spoiler

i think it would be pretty cool to be able to visit some of those old things and check them out even if it is just to get the feel of being nostalgic.

Minuteman Missile National Historic Site South Dakota

It would be on your way the Badlands (past Waldrug).. and on to the Blackhills, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Deadwood, and a quick loop to see Devil's Tower. There's, probably, still the dinosaur park on that stretch too.

Meh, in my neighborhood, the only secrets you're liable to stumble across would be stills in the hills.

Actually, that's not entirely true. We live near a lake that was created by the TVA back in the 1930's. At the bottom of the lake is what's left of a town that used to sit next to the creek they dammed up to make the lake. A road supposedly still leads right down to the lake and into it and several years back, during a particularly bad drought, the lake pool level got so low you could see the tops of buildings that were abandoned after the Army Corps moved people out in advance of the dam flooding the valley.

I used to live out near (about 2 hours from ) nWhitman's Air force base. Use to stay up to midnight and watch the stealth bombers fly out. (That was like 16 to 18 years ago)

There's no secrets here, but then again, if we're recalling all this information, they aren't really secrets anymore, now are they?

@b9 - was the movie 'My Girl' loosely based off your life?

Side note - no references to the early 90's band King Missile, yet? Let me be the first. King Missile - Detachable Penis

hahaha modi my ex used to make fun of me for being stuck in the 90s but damn you're making ME feel modern lately

You and I should get together some weekend. I'll don a t-shirt and flannel with my Doc Martens and Aviators and we can listen to Nirvana whilest we build new computers but manually set all the jumpers on the motherboard. If you got the cheddar for it we can dip and catch a Ska show, too. If not, aint no thing but a chicken wing, we can watch Frasier.
