Running MYSQL Database from network drive

Posted 13 June 2014 - 06:45 AM

Hi

Im designing an application for a company that needs to run from a database on their network drive.

At the moment they are using a microsoft access database thats in the network drive with a microsoft access from where they input info.

I am creating a whole new app with Java. I would like to create a new Database with MYSQL stored in the same folder on the network drive.

Is this possible?

MSAccess is a file like any word or excel doc. MYSQL is a relational database management system. For all intent and purpose it operates as a service on a machine similar to a server. Sure.. you can install it on a drive, but you'll need to be able to connect to the instance of it running. There is no parallel logic to MYSQL and a ms access file so don't be limited into thinking it *must* be in that folder.

Where else could i store the database?

Theres about 12 people on different machines all connected to the same network drive. They all need to share the same database.

Thanks

You would just use Java to connect to it over the drive mapping. So in stead of C:\whatever\database you would use W:\whatever\database assuming that W: is the mapped drive.

You may want to have your application verify the drive mapping, & that the file is there, before beginning.

Location doesn't matter. Access databases are flat files. Sql is a different animal. With MySql you need to think of port, & not file location. With MySql on a network drive, you are now talking server to server communications.

Based on your previous two posts, my advice :

Instead of worrying about 'where' & 'is this possible', you need to be going over 'why MySql', or 'why Access'. Those answers are much more important, imo.

... you would install it on a machine, vm, or where ever and go at it.

Im not quite sure what you mean.

Am i not approaching this the right way? I have used Java with MYSQL in the past and am familiar with running from local drive and would like to use the same setup again if possible. Java and MYSQL that is. But from a network drive instead.

When you installed it on your local drive it was running as a service so you can connect to "localhost". It's not a file, but a service and system.

Oh i understand that part but what im saying is, is it not the best solution? I need a database that will run off a networked drive in this company. They have a strict internet policy that will block any outgoing connections so if i host it on an external server they will have constant connection problems.

They have an Access database flat file on the network drive now that they fill through Access forms. I have created a Java App that i was trying to work off the same database but it just gives constant errors and problems. The boss says that i can start off fresh and they can just open access if they need old data.

Is there even any flat file systems that are good in this type of situation?

That's why I typically keep my DB servers inside the network.

Flat files suck for multi user interaction. They just do.

I guess there's sqllite, but that still locks up when something is being written.

Maybe MSSQL CE?

After taking a brief look at SQLite it seems to fit the bill. Im gonna test it over the next couple of days and see if its good.

I understand it locks up when being written but it will be rare that people use it at the same time.

The business goes 24 hours and has 2 x 12 hour shifts. At the end of each shift they open this program and log the days production stats.

During the day a couple of managers will generate reports from it but not much.

I dont think locking will be a big deal at all.

Okay, mysql and access are different animals. Mysql think of a server client relationship. When you're connecting to a mysql database you arent double clicking on the file to open the database like access. You're connecting to the mysql server. If the Mysql db is install on your LAN you wont have any problems accessing within your internal network.
