Want to make a SIMPLE file hosting site

Posted 15 June 2014 - 05:32 AM

Hello! Noob here. I want to make a simple file hosting site(kind of like mediafire) - I'm doing this for a college project. I want my own PC to host all the files. I think I know where to start but I feel I need some expert adivce on this. Any advice would be much MUCH appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Why would you want to use your own PC? why not snag some cheap hosting or even a virtual machine like amazons elastic cloud?

http://aws.amazon.com/
http://azure.microso...ing/free-trial/

The reason to pick something already web accessible is just ease of setup. Assuming your machine is just a regular laptop/desktop you would need to go to some lengths to make it web ready. Things like installing apache, mysql, etc to get it somewhat ready. You can get environments to do that WAMP, LAMP, XAMPP, etc but typically those are dev setups out of the box and not hardened to have the internet point at them. Then there's the issue of getting any router or firewall to portfoward through to your machine and have your machine ready for that. Then, finally, you would need to go about stiffening up your machine's settings so no random person can go willy nilly traipsing through your machine and then destroy everything on your drive, your homework, or what ever.

So, in other words, pay for some some hosting. The amazon has a one free year tier. Microsoft's azure has free stuff as well.. Maybe some cheap hosting like 'A Small Orange' or 'A1WHS'.. absolutely free hosting limits what you can do. Remind you that gets you a machine out on the net.. it doesn't give you a fancy url or nothing so be aware of that. Maybe something like noip.com would fix that.

There ya go. A break down of where to, and where not to, start.

Again, a question for a simple solution to a complex situation. *shrug*

Perhaps it's in perspective. Not sure if you want a simple solution, or simple usability.

If you are using PHP, be aware of the max file size is rather limited by default. 2gb I believe. You may also want to check for file type so people do not attempt to upload php, html, or script files.

Well guys, i've achieved my original task. Instead of paying for hosting, i found a website that offers the same service for free. My website is up and running and you can upload and download any file. One problem though - i wanted my site to have cloud storage. So i found a site called OwnCloud.org. But there is a problem with the PHP version, as you could see in the pic below..

I went back to check the version the site was using and sure enough..

Is there a way around this? I have a feeling it has something to do with .htaccess but honestly, i have no idea. I was so close dammit lol

I have no idea what you are doing with the owncloud, but if they are squawking about version numbers then that's a problem... and I really doubt you'll get 000webhost.com to change their ways.

Run your own PHP (LAMP/WAMP) server with whatever version you need.

Nope, php is php. .htaccess is part of Apache, & has nothing to do with the version of php.

After that i typed in mywebsitename.tk/png/setup-owncloud.php and got this..

You need to install WAMP as was suggested by modi123_1's first reply. It's as easy as following the directions.

Uninstall it. You're clearly not ready to manage a public facing web host. You'll get your PC raped by the first amateur script-kiddie that comes along. - It takes more than being able to install a developer targeted hosting package (like WAMP) to be ready for the internet.

What you were doing with 000webhost was the right idea, you just picked a (ridiculously) outdated host. There are plenty of hosts out there; go and find one with a PHP version that supports your software and install it there. - Also note that you will get MUCH better results if you are willing to pay a few dollars a month for the host.

It depends on what your end goal is.

If you want to learn hosting, you're going to get burned, & that's how you learn. I would say continue with WAMP, but back up & back up often.

If you just want the end result, pay for hosting. But you'll get what you pay for. Therefore free will likely suck, cheap will be meh, & a more expensive solution will probably come with some hand holding.
