Marketplace: Create from scratch or use existing solution?

Posted 23 June 2014 - 08:14 AM

Hi,

I'm going to create a marketplace where people can sell digital stuff only. Basically there are only 2 kind of products plus a market for freelancer-services.

The only shop system I've ever worked with is Magento, so I'll use it as my example. When I'd realize this with Magento, I'd have tons of functionality I don't need: E.g. attributes, cms, stock management etc. then I'd have to create 2 plugins, one for the "Marketplace" thing, so that you can register and then add a product and set a price etc. and one for the freelancer-service market where you can review the freelancer etc.

In the end, my needs differ a lot from what Magento is though for. Maybe you know a software which is designed for marketplaces?

What would you do? Create plugins for Magento CE, or create the application from scratch? My though are: If I modify Magento CE or any other software, I'd have to get into it again (which takes quite some time) and I know that the little plugin I did years ago wasn't really fun.

Create plugins for Magento CE, or create the application from scratch?

It sounds like money is involved so the question really becomes - how confident are you in your development work to secure it from malicious attacks or activities?

Sounds like your goal is completely different than Magneto. I'd suggest looking around for something that better suits your needs, or program it yourself. If you plan on this becoming a large thing, I'd just as soon program it myself.

Yes, money is involded but it's a one man project. So I'm not doing this for a customer. But yeah, other people buy stuff and I get a commission. (Not that theres a big difference)

This was something I was thinking about but forgot to mention. Magento is tested very well (at leas,t I assume so) which probably makes it safer than my work would be, I mean, it's a whole company behind it + open source. Also there are specially Magento hosting packages which probably involve some additional server security.

I hope it to grow.

It's hard to tell in your situation, mostly because I don't know much about Magento. But it seems like, from your post, you don't enjoy making plug-ins and you'd basically be creating all of the functionality you need anyway, but rather than have it stand-alone you'd slap it onto magento. Don't try to fit a square into a round hole, even if it is a really good square I guess is my advice.

yes, you summarised it very well. That's why I asked here for a few opinions.
Thanks

Instead of focusing on magento, look for a service based ecommerce and configure that?

Sure. I'm willing to use an existing solution but it should be open source. I'm searching but couldn't find what I need but I'll continue searching. Also hoped, by opening this thread, someone might point me to a nice software. :)

Basically there are only 2 kind of products plus a market for freelancer-services.

Two products? What place would host just two products? What are the two products? Mangos and thumbtacks?

Also why is the 'freelancer services' required to be folded into this? It would seem to be a different site.

Two kind of products => 2 Input forms. So no generic products which means I don't need stuff like custom attributes etc. Services and products are seperated but on the same site. Like dreamInCode has a forum but also a job section.
