Bootstrap or wordpress

Posted 23 June 2014 - 12:58 PM

I have been learning html css and javascript to get into web development but then I came across wordpress and bootstrap. I'm not sure which to use. With bootstrap i still get to learn how to program but im not sure how easy it is to keep pages and stuff maintained. but with WordPress,It looks like all i have to do is open the admin page. So which do you guys recommend or should I just do it all by myself?

Depends on the project. Ideally you would tinker with both.

I am going to be making a game review site based around indie games. I have messed with both. Wordpress seems like it would be easier to manage the pages and stuff.

Typically yeah.. Wordpress is a "content management system". CMS like that, joomla, or drupal all facilitate a framework for content to be housed, indexed, and displayed.

Bootstrap is a framework to develop a page, but it doesn't magically create a content management system. You have correctly deduced you would need to build that on your own.

Wordpress is a blog platform. It sounds like you are going to blog with it.. so, sure.. that or Drupal.

There are plenty of 'get started 101' tutorials on either wordpress or drupal's site.

As for users - "wordpress user profiles" or "wordpress user account" tends to pull up some suggestions, plugins, etc.

Well - get your feet under you and see how much work you feel like doing to roll your own CMS or use existing, and proven, options.

Wordpress and Drupal are 'content management systems' (CMS) that have been around for some time. They have regular updates, been worked over by many folk, and are have a large community to keep an eye out for exploits and to do releases. If you decide to roll your own CMS you have the benefit of none of those. It will be you versus who ever out there thinks it would be a fun idea to tinker with your site because you neglected some security flaw.

Ah ok. Well I am looking at a website that does pros and cons of Drupal,Joomla and WordPress. It says that Drupal is harder to learn then the other too and that most of it's modules are not free. It also said that it doesn't have much customizing options. So I probably wont be using that one. Im still reading about Joomla and WordPress to see which one is a good fit for me.

I would disagree with that statement on Drupal, but so it goes.

Sure drupal isn't as candy coated as wordpress, but it is equally powerful, equally customizable, and about a bajillion plugins as wordpress does. I would almost say it is the more business orientated of the two.

No this site is not drupal or wordpress.

Alright. I wasn't sure how accurate that is. I don't have a problem with learning anything. I also don't expect to release a site and suddenly get thousands of traffic a day. I know it will take work. I just need to find the perfect fit for me. Drupal does sound promising though. I might post on their forums to get a bit more help on setting it up so it has a user profile page and stuff.
