Halt and Catch Fire

Posted 02 July 2014 - 03:21 AM

Stumbled onto this show the other day. Anyone else seen it? A friend and I were discussing the old HCF command and I was wondering what the specifics were, so I googled it and bam, tv show called Halt and Catch Fire exists. So I watched it. I really liked it a lot.

I liked the first episode but the second one just annoyed me so I stopped watching.

I've been watching it regularly. It's not bad. Slick and amusing in a 'Man Men' sort of way. It peppers enough programming/geek jokes in it to give it perks, but the show is a drama about the hubris of Joe.. so.. yeah.

meh, Joe is...shit. I'll be interested to see what comes of it. The scene between him and the one woman's husband was pretty interesting. New territory for AMC to throw at a main character (there was Sal in Mad Men, but he was an aside).

Admittedly, my biggest draw is Cameron.

it should also be noted that I'm a huge fan of Mad Men, so with the same LAF in an IT setting, this is awesome

I never watched Madmen except an odd episode.. I find their scene dressing pretty spot on and intriguing. Cameron makes me roll my eyes more than most.

Her whole character screams gross caricature in ridiculous proportions. She's a nifty pair of sunglasses and a trench coat away from being a walk on for the Matrix 4 with all that heavy handed angst she is brewing. I get her role in the script, but it doesn't sit well with me especially when compare to the other co-female role of Donna.

eh, I guess I'm jaded to overblown charicature. It's TV, I don't expect good writing.

Yeah I am a regular watcher of it. The one thing interesting about it is that just when I think I get the direction, they flip it on ya so you are left with "Where is all this going again?"

Like at first you see them trying to build this new PC. So you think they are going to be all about the struggles to get it out and make it big like the next Apple, so Joe is putting together this top team. But then of course he appears to turn on them all and tells them where to go and stuff. Is he building loyalty? Is he attempting to inspire Cameron? Or is he just taking advantage of them to prove to his dad he is the next big thing?

I am hoping they land on some central theme soon so we can see things progress in a direction that makes us invested in the characters. Not just saying "Oh here goes Cameron again freaking out and Joe getting beat up again. What is new?"

Pllundering the Hacker's Dictionary for a title is a pretty good indication that there's not a scrap of original thought involved in the production. Why waste your time with it?

the first two episodes impressed me, watched more and it's kinda downhill. But again, I don't really expect good writing on TV.
