Builds on one machine but not another

Posted 15 July 2014 - 02:27 PM

New poster here. former coder turned project manager. still code on the side.

I have a program that I wrote in VB.NET. I had a developer add some code to integrate it with facebook and twitter. He included a twitter sdk folder full of twitter dll files.

It compiled fine. I started messing around with it, adding forms, code etc and at some point I started getting 2 build errors:
'TwitterCredentials' is not declared. It may be inaccessible due to its protection level.
'Tweet' is not declared. It may be inaccessible due to its protection level.

Crap! out of frustration, I deleted the whole project, folder, everything and re downloaded the code as it was given to me by the dev who added the twitter functions.

Now that original code is giving me the same errors.
I removed and re added the reference to the twitter dll files

I tried project --> clean and rebuild
no matter what I do I get these two errors.

For grins, I put the code on a different machine and it builds perfectly.

Any suggestions?

That's rough to say. Your description seems to indicate heavy jacking around with the project, code, etc. and that can encompass a whole mess of territory. Perhaps you didn't delete the right project, uninstalled some required dlls, etc. Honestly - have you tried deleting the project, rebooting, un-archive it, and then try to rebuild it?

Unarchive.. you know.. how ever you are storing your code that the dev gave you.. a zip file, TFS, git, etc. Where ever the untainted source is.

And here are more details.

I made the mistake of giving the developer a program that had a nested folder in it with some duplicate forms that were in the root.

I am building a scaled down version of a larger program.

I really should have cleaned it up before giving it to him.
I started trying to clean it up after.

I opened it, and I removed some images that were used as buttons in the larger program.
I deleted a couple forms but did not touch any of the Dll files.

It was after removing these resources (images and a couple forms)that I got the build errors.

So I tried adding some of the things back and finally just deleted the entire project and re downloaded the zip file he sent me and started over

however the very first thing i did after unzipping his file was build it and it failed.

So something is sticking in memory or somewhere (forgive me I am not a stellar .NET developer anymore so I lack some knowledge and vocabulary) maybe the gac or something???

I don't know

oops almost forgot. I also renamed the program. In the Ide, right clicked and renamed the program and startup function as well.

But after doing all that what would my computer hang on to?

I even did a sysrestore and reinstalled Visual studio (2010) opened the original program again and get same build error.

so confusing.

okay yes it is the untainted source.that will no longer build.
It is wont build on my main PC, took it to work and it builds fine.

Hi,
Have you tried deleting the project folder from the Visual Studio Folder, deleting any Settings files that may be stored in the Local (Settings\Application Data) folder, restarting your computer, and then open and build a Fresh copy (Un-Modified in any way) of the project that you downloaded?

If that does not work then i am really lost as to why it would have built the first time but, not again. Unless it deleted or modified something in your system somehow. :dontgetit:

on the machine where it is working.
solution explorer all the twitter dll files have just a rounded rectangle icon and properties says "reference properties"

on the non working machine the icon is different and properties says "file properties"

Disregard that.
I was looking at 2 dfferent things

So here is what I am seeing

I remove and add references to the twitter Dll files
All of them show up in my object browser when searching "my solution"

The variables in the errors are defined and good to go.

When I click build, all the references in the object browser for these dll files go away
They are still in "references" in my solution explorer but they are removed from object browser if I build or debug.

This is weird.
