You need a program (service/daemon) running on a machine that will answer port 80 requests. As well, you will need port 80 to be open. Most (U.S.) ISPs will block port 80 on non-commercial service, forcing you to pay more to have that privilege.

This will only get your ip to answer port 80 requests, therefor offering a webserver. If you do want, however, to have a domain name (ex, a dot com, dot net, dot org), you'll need a DNS service to offer your ip to answer to domain name requests.

Apache is a normal webserver, it can run on Windows & *nix servers.

I hope this helps.

http://httpd.apache.org/ <-- Service/Daemon

I use EveryDns.net, & it's free, & I'm sure that you can find others for free DNS.

Most people pay web hosts to host the web site for them. It is much easier to do but obviously costs more.

It really depends on what your goals are. I started hosting just to learn it, now I run close to 20 websites on 2 webservers in an actual location. You can't pay for that kind of job related experience.

Same. On the self-hosting just to learn. Although I really haven't... :)

That and it's fun to tell my friends that that computer in the corner is actually hosing my website.
