Getting a job in web dev

Posted 24 July 2014 - 02:27 PM

Hi everyone, I've always been interested in web development and other programing. I know how to make a site (the code may be a little choppy but looks like I want it to). I just want to get into it more and make some money doing it. Obviously I could try and get some freelance work but I'd prefer to work with other people to grow on their knowledge. But either way I'd be happy. I do live in WA in between Seattle and Tacoma, which is supposed to be a big place for this yet I'm stumped what to do next. Any suggestion? I don't have a certificate or degree in the field but I do have a AA. I'm also not looking to make a ton of money, just about 2,500 a month (so about $15 an hour) that way I can try and leave my current job and just focus on this.

If you can't really think of anything then how about how you got started. Maybe I can pull an idea from that.

Help everyone,
thank you :)

I am confused.. you want to do this part time, but not freelance, but work with other people like a company that is not a company?

I'd prefer to work with other people in a company but I don't feel like I'm qualified enough to get hired on therefore I feel like freelance would make the most sense.

And I would like to do this full time but I understand that there is a transitional period and I still need to bring in income during that.

This seems to be an intensely repetitive topic which boils down to:

1. know your code and cut out the slop
2. know front end and back end development.
3. at least know: html, css, javascript, php, and a smattering of mysql.
4. know how to visually design a page so that it is usable.
5. know basic security.
6. be proactive to bid on freelance projects
7. be able to complete them (aka don't go in too far over your head)
8. be goal orientated and not some slacker.
9. know how to design a project before you code
10. No one here really knows who you are, your work ethic, learning abilities, etc. Nothing is a guarenteed income.

I would suggest making a web presence, github, personal site ... make an account on freelance sites like freelancer.com and take all the required skill tests.

Oh, I thought I looked for other topics and couldn't find one. Sorry I started a repetitive post, I must not have looked very hard.
