In all honesty who won the space race?

Posted 31 July 2014 - 02:23 PM

I have asked this question in the past on a different website and never got a proper answer.

In school they taught us there is no correct answer and that the space race is never ending, Russia went to space first but USA landed on the moon first.

Kennedy said their definition of the space race was to land a man on the moon. But this seems to be strange with me, would you not call it the moon race? the term "space race" suggests to me first man in space or hell first anything in space.

If this was the case we could very well call "space race" first man on another planet or hell first man in another galaxy or another solar system.

This seems like a very odd semantic discussion.

The Space Race was a specific period where the USSR and the US were vying for being the king of the hill in space flight. If you carry out the analogy of it being a 'race' then there are multiple legs. Throwing a probe out.. throwing out monkeys and dogs.. a few people.. someone on the moon, etc. The real winners were the science and tech sectors that were loaded with cash, people, and encouragement.

I think you are right.

I just don't get how Americans outright claim that USA won the space race as though its fact

^ are you suggesting that I am a troll?

It was actually a serious and genuine question. Even a google search would not give you a correct answer to this question.

Sorry but I don't do very well in off topic discussions, I make enemies quite easily for some reason.

Most folks considered the goal of the Space Race to be the first to the Moon...which the US won. Most people don't recall the Soviets even having a manned moon mission planned but they did. They started late, officially denied they were even trying and eventually cancelled two secret programs due to the Americans beating them to a couple of milestones as well as some disasters with a heavy lift rocket they were developing to support their manned moon program.

It was even officially admitted to until after the Soviet Union collapsed and old communist era records were opened. Basically, the Soviets would have liked nothing more than to have beaten Americans to Kennedy's stated goal of landing a man on the moon before 1970 but they were afraid their late start and emphasis on earth orbital missions left them in an inferior position to compete...so they always denied they were even considering it.

Fun fact: in their lander design, much was the same as what the Americans eventually came up with. The Soviet model though, when rendevousing with the lunar orbiter after blasting off from the Moon, had the two cosmonauts not docking with the orbiter but spacewalking to it. Their model never had the lander redocking with the orbiter...they expected the cosmonauts to go for a space stroll and lug their moon rocks with them.

well if you grow up in America youll here that America won
(even though there was no clear winner)
I assume its the same in Russia if you grow up there they think they win

I would say if the space race was still going on I would say Russia won because they still have a space program/make rockets

my grammer/ spelling is the bestest

In which case it's not the US Space Program. It's more comparable to Japan's military of the 80s.
