Suggest me which language I should choose to learn as I am new

Posted 31 July 2014 - 07:01 PM

As a banker I used Excel a lot. I asked many friends about VBA nobody was even knowing about it. I started learning online but found very difficult. Before joining Dreamincode, I found discussion "whether vb6 useless" and now completely confused and back to the square1. Pl suggest which programming language should I learn so that remain coputer literate.
Thanks & regards.

It depends on the application for the language.

modi's right - there are many languages because there are many programmers and many sorts of programs.

Python and java are popular choices for beginners, and they're both reasonable places to start, but there are countless others.

I'll say, learn SQL. You will find a use for it regardless of what other languages you pickup, it's fairly simple to grasp, and it gives a base.

If you want to learn VBA for Excel then you might get hold of the book "Excel 20?? VBA for Dummies" by John Walkenbach.

VBA and VB6 are different things (although related) and VBA for Office is not disappearing anytime soon.

I would suggest C++ as a starting point since if you know C++ you know the basic structure in many other languages (my opinion). I may also be biased because that's what I started out with.

Java is good too, I would say it's a bit "cleaner" than C++ and you can use java skills into javascript, which is used for web applications if you are interested in that sort of thing.

There is no relationship between Java and Javascript, other than that all three languages share the same C-syntax roots. So you could just as easily say that C++ leads to Javascript as say that Java does. Neither lead-to Javascript, but knowing either C++ or Java would make learning JS easier, because they all use curly brackets (braces).
