Homepage broken after update

Posted 07 August 2014 - 07:13 AM

I recently had to update a site manually and after that the site's homepage is broken. The original developer is not available to help. The page template seems fine, it's just not displaying on the web.

Here is the code for the homepage template.
<?php
/**
 * Template Name: EJM Home Page
 */
?>

<?php get_header(); ?>

<div id="indexcontent" class="grid_16">
	<div class="clear"></div>
	<!-- <div id="slider" class="grid_16 alpha">
		<?php the_uds_billboard('home-page-billboard'); ?>

		<!--

		<a href="http://www.ejworship.org/about"><span><img src="<?php bloginfo('template_url'); ?>/images/slider/aboutejm.jpg" alt="Learn About EJM" /></span></a>
		<a href="http://www.ejworship.org/dreamlife"><span><img src="<?php bloginfo('template_url'); ?>/images/slider/dreamlife.jpg" alt="DreamLife Needs You" /></span></a>
		<a href="http://ejworship.bigcartel.com"><span><img src="<?php bloginfo('template_url'); ?>/images/slider/store.jpg" alt="Official EJM Store" /></span></a>

		-->

	</div><!-- END SLIDER -->

	<div class="clear"></div>
	<!-- Focus Four Sprite - I love sprites :)/> -->
	<div id="focusfour" class="grid_16 alpha">
		<div class="grid_4 alpha support focus">
			<h4><a href="http://www.ejworship.org/support">Support The Cause</a></h4>
			<p>Please consider becoming a monthly partner or <a class="highlightbutton" href="http://www.ejworship.org/donate">Give</a> as the Lord leads so that lives can be saved, set free, delivered, and restored.</p>
		</div>
		<div class="grid_4 focus">

You need to be more specific than broke. Errors that are showing, something tangible that we can decipher.

And what was updated? WordPress, Drupal, core files, modules? Be as specific as possible.

Sorry. Hope this helps.

I had to do a manual Wordpress core update because the site was completely unreachable, except by FTP. The site is back up but the homepage is not displaying all of it items. The rest of the pages are displaying properly. The code in the OR is the homepage template.

Did you make any changes to the page? If so, what changes?

No, I haven't made any changes to the template. I'm not sure what to change that would make a difference. It's loading the header and that's all.

I would check the error log first. Was it the minor upgrade to 3.9.1?

It was an update to 3.9.1, but I do not know the version it was on. The site was unaccessible. Here's the latest entry on the error log.

[26-Jul-2014 19:34:41 UTC] PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function get_header() in /home/ejworshp/public_html/wp-content/themes/ejmtheme/index.php on line 1

Did you also add the get_footer function to the page?

My first thought would be your theme is not compatible with the version and rather than sever the link to the repo, as your developer should have done , it caused the issues.

Yes, it is calling the get_footer at the bottom of the page.

If you take a look at ejworship.org, you can see that the home page is broken but the rest of the site seems fine.

Could I sever the link to the repo?

Change the theme/ plugin name slightly. Then when an update occurs it cannot update it... But, it would still have to work with your version.

It appears that it's not calling the page-indexpage.php layout that is designed for the home page after the header. Is there a logical reason why it wouldn't be?

Would it be possible to rebuild the page to see if a newly coded page would fix it?

Disable the theme/ plugin and see if it still causes the issue. You at least have a place to start with that.
