Java Game Development (beginner) book

Posted 08 September 2014 - 08:44 AM

I have read "Head First Java" and now i want to move on and make a 2D game. But I am not sure what I should look for because a book like: http://www.amazon.co...a/dp/1305076532 is to hard for me, cause it's only code with no explanation. But i want a book that explains everything step by step and is easy to read. I was thinking about this book: http://www.amazon.co...n/dp/1592730051 but it's from 2003 while the other one is from this year. But the book "Developing games in java"is a book that covers Path-Finding, what i need because i want to make a 2D Tower Defence game.

Do you guys know a good book for me that's not to old and has a good explanation(I have no problem if the book is written in Englisch)?
By the way: sorry guys for bad Englisch, I am from The Netherlands.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

What's wrong with that first book? From the preview it looks to be an accurate, and typical, code to explanation ratio going on.

Just a heads up- game programming isn't easy. I would encourage you to focus on thinking and problem solving, rather than a book that will hold your hand through making your desired project. By focusing on problem solving, you'll be learning how to develop projects where there isn't a guide to hold your hand.

The first book you linked to covers GAME development in Java, as per the title of said book. Again- what is wrong with it?

Well.. yeah.. that's the point of the book. Isn't that what you are looking for? More specific knowledge of game development with a java flair?

i know what you mean...u meant the first book i gave as a example...But the problem with that book is, i found this website where i could look into the book, and it's like when u say how the "hello world" works, without telling what System.out.println("hello world") does. So that's my problem with the first book, and the second book is to old(i think) cause its 11 years ago.

So do you know a book that has good explanation but isn't that old

sorry for my misunderstanding :3 :/

s, i found this website where i could look into the book,

Are you talking about amazon's preview? (Hopefully not some book pirating site)

without telling what System.out.println("hello world") does.

If you have gone through the headfirst book and are not sure what that line does then you need to review somethings. Perhaps find a less graphic orientated book and something more concert. Not to mention you can go to the java docs and look things like that up.

first I am talking about https://www.safaribooksonline.com/ website.
Secondly:
I am looking for a book that explains everything I need. So a explanation like in Head First Java, but then with Game Development(2D). And the Fundamental 2D book, has code, without explaining what everything does(actually , 80-85% is code with almost no explaining what everything does). Fundamental 2D is a more advanced book for game programming than the other book(link) i gave in my question, except its to old(I think).

sorry for incredible bad explanation :( hopefully can you see what I mean.

Yeah, but if you're starting game programming, you should have a handle on the basics. A book shouldn't have to explain a piece of code line by line. You should be able to pick out the big ideas, run the code, play around with things, etc. That's part of the learning process, not having your hand held.

So what would be a good book for me to learn next?

We have a whole thread devoted to beginner Java books. There are probably some good hand-holding books. I doubt you'll find a quality game programming book that holds your hand.
