Simple compiler or IDE

Posted 08 September 2014 - 11:34 PM

I'm completely new to c++, and looking for a very simple compiler. I come from doing python, and LOVE using it's IDE that is just a single text page. I have looked at visual studio and code::blocks, but it is waay to much than I need and can handle. I have also done HTML/CSS, which is where I started which got me into the simple text doc.

Well you could learn how to compile from command line then you can just use text editors. But linking is less pleasant that way.

Here is stroustrup list http://stroustrup.com/compilers.html

I use both VS and Code::blocks.
Code::blocks is simpler. I think you should try to learn it. It will make things easier.
If all the features look complicate you unclick them from the view menu.
If you are going minimal I would leave Project Manager, Logs, and Toolbar->Compile.
Just make a blank Project.
To make file either click new file, say yes to add to project.
Or you can add previously made files in folder. With: Right click project in project manager to add files.

Type the code and click build and run. Under build or gear and play button.

I wish not to use something less heavy and more lightweight in itself. I think I saw something about 'Vim' but not sure what exactly it is. If I must in the end, I'll download code::blocks (visual doesn't run on my computer for some reason,I already tried and it just crashes. Was on when I bought it)

We have an existing IDE discussion thread. I'd start by reading over that.
